# Generate app icons for iOS and Android

Add one square logo or artwork, and download the icons Xcode and Android Studio expect, in the right folders.

## How it works

1. **Add your images** Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.
2. **Pick a quality or a target size** Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.
3. **Download** Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

An app needs its icon in many places: one large icon for iOS that Xcode scales for the home screen, settings and notifications, a set of Android launcher icons for screens of every density, a round version for launchers that show circles, and a 512-pixel icon for the Play Store listing. Making them one by one in an image editor is slow and easy to get wrong.

This page makes them all from one picture. Choose the background colour that fills the square and how much space to leave round the artwork, and the previews show the icons as phones present them: rounded on iOS, round and square on Android. Download one ZIP, then drop the AppIcon.appiconset folder into the Xcode asset catalog and the mipmap folders into your Android project's res folder.

The picture is processed on our server and deleted once the icons are made.

## What the ZIP contains

For iOS, a 1024 by 1024 PNG with no transparency and the Contents.json that tells Xcode 14 and later to make every other size from it. For Android, ic_launcher.png and ic_launcher_round.png in mipmap-mdpi, hdpi, xhdpi, xxhdpi and xxxhdpi, from 48 to 192 pixels, and play-store-512.png for the store listing.

## Starting from the right picture

Use a square picture of at least 1024 pixels, ideally a logo exported from its original file. Keep the artwork simple and bold: the icon is shown at little more than a centimetre across, so fine text and thin lines vanish. Leave the corners plain, because iOS rounds them and many Android launchers cut the icon to a circle or a squircle.

## Padding and background

Padding keeps the artwork away from the edges that will be cut. Around ten percent suits most logos; a round mark needs less. Pick the brand colour as background, or white for a logo that already has its own coloured shape.

## Adaptive icons on Android

Newer Android versions prefer adaptive icons, made of a foreground and a background layer that the launcher animates and masks. The PNGs here work everywhere as the legacy icon; for the adaptive version, Android Studio's Image Asset tool can take the same artwork and background colour.

Keep the original artwork; when the brand changes, run it through again and replace the folders in one step.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is my icon not transparent?

Apple rejects app icons with transparency, and launchers mask Android icons anyway, so the background colour fills the square.

### Does it work for older Xcode versions?

Xcode 13 and earlier want each size listed separately. Xcode 14 and later accept the single icon in this ZIP.

### Can I use an SVG?

Yes. SVG logos are drawn at full size, so the icons come out sharp.

### What about the favicon for my website?

The favicon generator makes the icons a website needs, including the Apple touch icon.

### Is my logo stored?

No. The icons are drawn on our server and the upload is wiped from it once the ZIP is sent.

### Can I call this from a build script?

Yes: POST /api/v1/app-icons returns the same ZIP.

### Why do the Android round icons have see-through corners?

They are cut to a circle for launchers that show round icons, so the part outside the circle is transparent.
