How it works

  1. Add your images

Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

WebP has been around longer than AVIF and is accepted by more tools: content management systems, chat apps, image editors and social platforms that still turn AVIF away will often take WebP. Converting keeps the file compact while removing most of those compatibility problems.

WebP supports transparency, so cut-outs and logos keep their alpha channel through the conversion, which makes it a better target than JPEG whenever the image is not a plain rectangle of photo. Expect the WebP to be somewhat larger than the AVIF at a comparable quality; that difference is the cost of the wider support.

Both formats are lossy by default, so this is a second round of compression on the same picture. Starting at a fairly high quality setting keeps the added loss small; raise it further if you see smearing in fine detail, or choose Lossless mode to add no loss at all at the price of a bigger file. Your AVIF is sent over an encrypted connection, converted on our own servers in the EU and never kept; the WebP is deleted within one hour.

The middle of the compatibility ladder

Think of three rungs. JPEG and PNG open in everything made in the last thirty years. WebP opens in everything made in roughly the last ten, plus most of what was updated in that time. AVIF opens in current browsers and a growing but still incomplete set of other programs. Moving from AVIF to WebP is one step down the ladder, and it buys a lot of reach for little size: image editors released since about 2022, most content management systems, the sticker formats of messaging apps and many social platforms accept WebP and turn AVIF away.

Settings for a clean conversion

This page starts at quality 85, deliberately high. The AVIF has already made its compromises, and a WebP encoder set low would add its own on top, softening textures that had survived the first round. At 85 the WebP reproduces what the AVIF shows and typically stays within one and a half times its size. If the file has to be smaller, go down in steps of five and watch the fine detail; most photos are still fine at 75.

For graphics, switch to Lossless. A logo, a chart or an interface screenshot that was stored as AVIF comes out as a pixel-exact WebP, and for that kind of content the lossless file is often no larger than a lossy one.

When to go one rung further

WebP is not the answer to every refusal. Email programs are the main exception: several still do not display it inside a message, so pictures for newsletters and signatures should be JPEG or PNG. The same goes for office documents that colleagues on old software have to open, for print shops, and for government upload forms, which commonly list only JPG and PNG. If the place your picture is going names its formats, give it one of those and skip WebP altogether.

Frequently asked questions

Will the WebP be bigger than the AVIF?

Usually a little, at similar quality. AVIF is the more efficient of the two formats.

Does WebP keep transparency?

Yes. Transparent areas are preserved.

Where does WebP work that AVIF does not?

In many content management systems, chat apps and older editors that have not added AVIF support yet.

Can I avoid losing more quality?

Choose Lossless mode in the editor. The file is larger, but the conversion adds no loss.

Can I convert many AVIF files in one go?

Yes. Add up to twenty at a time without an account, or 500 with Pro, and each comes back as a WebP with the same name. Download them one by one or together as a ZIP.

Which is better for my website, WebP or AVIF?

Offer both if you can, the AVIF first. If you can only serve one file, WebP is the safer choice because every browser from the last several years reads it.
