How it works

  1. Add your images

Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

Add a photo and every face in it is found and blurred within a second or two. Each face gets a box on the preview. Click a box to leave that face visible, click it again to hide it, and drag anywhere on the picture to hide something the detector did not mark. When the preview looks right, download the result.

The blur covers an oval slightly larger than each face box, so the hairline, ears and chin are inside it. Its strength is set with one slider and is measured against the size of each face, which means a small face in the background is hidden as thoroughly as a large one in front. The rest of the photo is not touched.

No detector finds every face. Small faces in a crowd, faces in profile, and faces behind sunglasses, masks or hands are the ones most often missed, and a missed face is published as it is. Treat the automatic result as a first pass. Look over the whole picture at full size, add areas where needed, and only then share it.

How the faces are found

The photo is sent to our servers over an encrypted connection and examined by YuNet, a small open-source face detector published by the OpenCV project. It answers one question, where in this picture is something shaped like a face, and returns a rectangle for each. It does not recognise who anyone is, does not compare faces with any database, and keeps nothing.

Large pictures are also examined in overlapping tiles, because a face that is only a few pixels wide after the whole photo is scaled down would otherwise be overlooked. Very close portraits are checked at a reduced size for the opposite reason.

How strong the blur should be

A light blur softens a face but leaves it recognisable to anyone who knows the person: the outline of the hair, the glasses and the skin tone all survive. If the aim is that nobody can tell who it is, push the slider well past the middle until the features merge into a smooth patch. If the aim is only to make a bystander less prominent, a lower value keeps the photo looking natural.

Check the result at the size it will be seen. A blur that hides a face on a phone screen may be less convincing on a large monitor.

What is in the file you download

The result keeps the format of the photo you added, so a JPG comes back as a JPG and a PNG as a PNG, saved at high quality. The blurred pixels replace the originals; the face is not stored underneath and cannot be recovered from the file. The download also carries no EXIF data, so the camera model, the date and any GPS position recorded by a phone are gone as well.

Several photos at once

You can add a whole set of pictures. Each one is examined separately and appears in the strip under the preview, where you can open it, review its boxes and adjust them. The effect and its strength apply to the whole set. When every picture has been checked, one button downloads them together as a ZIP file.

Frequently asked questions

Is blurring faces free?

Yes. It needs no account and puts no watermark on the picture.

Can I blur only one face and keep the others?

Yes. Click the boxes of the faces you want to keep, and the blur is removed from them.

Can I blur something that is not a face?

Yes. Drag a rectangle over it, or use "Add an area". A licence plate, a name badge or a screen can be hidden the same way.

Can the blur be reversed?

Not from the file. The original pixels are replaced. A very weak blur can still leave a person recognisable, which is a reason to use a strong one.

Are my photos kept?

No. A photo is processed on our own servers, deleted once the result has been returned, and never sent to another company.

Which formats can I add?

JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF and HEIC photos from a phone, among others. Formats a browser cannot save, such as HEIC, come back as JPG.
