A photo with many people in it is the hard case for hiding faces by hand. Painting over thirty heads in an image editor takes an evening. Here the picture is scanned and every face found is covered in one pass. A crowd shot with dozens of people is handled in about the time it takes to upload it.
Often the point is to hide some people and not others: your own child stays visible in the school photo, the speaker stays visible in front of the audience. Each face has its own box on the preview. Click the ones that should remain clear. The counter above the picture tells you how many areas are hidden out of the total, so nothing is switched off by accident.
The more people in a picture, the more likely one of them is missed. Someone at the back whose face is a dozen pixels wide, a child looking down, a person half hidden behind another: these are typical gaps. Zoom your browser in on the preview and scan it row by row, then drag a rectangle over any face that is still showing.
Why crowd photos need a second look
A face detector works on patterns of light and shadow that eyes, a nose and a mouth produce. In the front rows that pattern is clear. Towards the back, faces shrink until they are a few pixels across, and the pattern dissolves into noise. This tool examines large pictures in overlapping sections to reach smaller faces, but there is always a size below which a face is not found by any detector.
Faces turned sideways or tilted far back, faces under hats that shade the eyes, and faces partly outside the frame are the other usual misses.
Who can still be recognised
A hidden face does not always make a person anonymous. In a small group, people who know each other can identify someone from height, clothing, hair or the place they are standing. A school class with one face left clear and the others blurred is still recognisable to every parent of that class. Consider that before posting, and remember the caption and the location tag say a lot too.
Working through an album
Add all the pictures from an event together. Each is scanned as it arrives, and the strip below the preview shows which ones are finished. Open them one at a time, clear the boxes of the people who agreed to be shown, add areas where a face was overlooked, and move on. The blur strength is shared across the set, so the album looks consistent.
When you have been through every picture, download them all as one ZIP. The files keep their names with "blurred" added, so they sort next to the originals without overwriting them.
Format and quality
Each result is saved in the format of its original at high quality, which keeps a JPG album a JPG album. Nothing outside the blurred ovals changes, although a JPG is encoded again when it is saved, as it is by any editor. If file size matters afterwards, run the finished pictures through the compressor.
Frequently asked questions
How many faces can be blurred in one photo?
Up to 100 areas per picture, which covers most group and crowd photos.
Can I keep my own face clear?
Yes. Click your box on the preview and the blur is lifted from that face only.
Some faces at the back were not found. What can I do?
Drag a rectangle over each of them on the preview. Hand-drawn areas are blurred exactly like detected ones.
Can I process many photos together?
Yes. Add them in one go and download the results as a ZIP. The number per batch depends on your plan.
Does the tool know who the people are?
No. It finds face-shaped regions and nothing more. There is no recognition and no database of faces.
Is permission still needed to post a photo with blurred faces?
That depends on the law where you live and on the situation. Blurring reduces what a picture reveals; it does not replace asking.
