How it works

  1. Add your images

Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

Few conversions are as easy to recommend as this one. A BMP stores its pixels raw, with no compression. A PNG stores the very same pixels, packed losslessly. Nothing about the picture changes, and the file becomes a fraction of what it was. A BMP is a PNG that has not been packed yet.

Add your bitmaps and each comes back as a PNG at this page's lossless setting: identical colours, identical edges, and transparency too where a 32-bit bitmap carries it. PNG opens in browsers, on phones and in every image and office program, where BMP is increasingly treated as an oddity.

Twenty files convert at once without an account. Bitmaps are heavy, so mind the limits: 20 MB a file on the free plan, 200 MB on Pro, and 16 megapixels for a BMP. The upload is encrypted and the files are deleted within an hour.

What the saving looks like

The gain depends on the content, and it is largest for the things most often saved as BMP. A Full HD screenshot is 6.2 MB as a bitmap and commonly 150 to 400 KB as a PNG. A chart or a diagram from a measuring instrument, mostly white with a few lines, can shrink a hundredfold. A scanned line drawing behaves the same way.

Photographs gain less, because their detail does not pack well without loss: a twelve-megapixel photo goes from 36 MB to perhaps 15 or 20. If the bitmap is a photo and only needs to be viewed or sent, the BMP to JPG page on this site gives a much smaller file.

Where bitmaps come from today

The classic source is Windows itself. For many years Paint saved in BMP unless told otherwise, and a screenshot pasted into it and saved without a thought became a six-megabyte file. Old documentation, company archives and shared drives are full of them. The second source is equipment: oscilloscopes, microscopes, industrial cameras and medical devices export BMP because the format is trivial to write. The third is software development, where sprites and textures for older games and embedded displays are kept as bitmaps.

In every one of these cases the PNG is a drop-in replacement for viewing, sharing and documentation.

When something still needs a BMP

Some devices and old programs read nothing else: a display controller, a machine's operator panel, a tool written twenty years ago. Converting your archive to PNG does not strand them, because the step back is as lossless as the step forward. BMP is offered as an output format in the editor's Format menu, written as a standard uncompressed 24-bit bitmap. Keep PNGs for storage and sending, and make a BMP at the moment a device asks for one.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PNG really identical to the BMP?

Yes. At this page's settings every pixel is stored with exactly the value it had. Only the packing differs.

How much smaller will it be?

Typically ten to twenty times for screenshots and drawings, and about half for photographs.

Does a 32-bit BMP keep its transparency?

Yes, when the bitmap declares an alpha channel. It becomes the transparency of the PNG.

Which BMP files are not supported?

The rare run-length-compressed variants, and bitmaps of more than 16 megapixels. They are refused with a message and never converted wrongly.

Can I make the PNG even smaller?

Yes. Lower the quality below 90 and the colours are reduced to a palette, which shrinks graphics a great deal with little or no visible change.

Can I convert a PNG back to BMP?

Yes. Add the PNG on the home page and choose BMP as the output format in the editor.
