# Change the aspect ratio of an image

Crop a picture to the shape a screen, post or print needs: wide, tall, portrait or square.

## How it works

1. **Add your images** Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.
2. **Pick a quality or a target size** Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.
3. **Download** Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

Every place a picture goes has its own shape. Video thumbnails and presentation slides are 16:9, phone stories and reels 9:16, Instagram portrait posts 4:5, printed photos often 3:4 or 4:3, and profile pictures 1:1. A photo in the wrong shape gets cut off by the app, usually in the wrong place, or framed by black bars.

Add your picture, pick the ratio and a frame of that exact shape appears. Move it to the part you want to keep and resize it from the corners; it never loses its proportions. If you would rather not choose, placement by face or subject puts the frame on the most important part automatically.

The crop is made at the photo's full resolution, so the result is as sharp as the original. Choose free cropping instead and the frame takes any shape you drag.

## Which ratio for which use

16:9 suits YouTube thumbnails, laptop and TV screens and most slides. 9:16 is the full-screen phone format for stories and short videos. 4:5 is the tallest shape Instagram's feed has long shown without cropping, and 1:1 works everywhere. 3:4 and 4:3 match many printed photo sizes and tablets.

Going from wide to tall cuts away much of a picture, so check that the subject still fits before you download.

## Keeping everything in the frame

Cropping always removes something. If the whole picture must stay, fit it into the new shape with plain bands instead: the Instagram page without cropping and the WhatsApp page do that for their sizes, and the resize settings can pad any picture into any box.

## Batches

Add a set of photos and all of them get the chosen ratio, each with its own frame you can move. That turns a mixed batch of landscape and portrait shots into one consistent set.

## Privacy

Your pictures are processed on our server and deleted once the new versions are ready.

## Exact pixel sizes

A ratio is a shape, not a size. If a platform asks for, say, 1920 by 1080 pixels, crop to 16:9 here and set the size in the resize settings of the same panel; both happen in one pass.

## Placing the frame well

Before downloading, check the edges of the new frame. A horizon cut at an angle, a hand half out of the picture or a sign cut mid-word are the common mistakes of a quick crop, and moving the frame a little usually fixes all three.

## Prints

For prints, match the ratio to the paper: 4:3 or 3:4 for many standard photo prints, and a 2:3 shape for 4 by 6 inch prints. Cropping first means the lab does not cut your picture for you.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which ratios can I choose?

1:1, 4:5, 3:4, 4:3, 16:9 and 9:16, or free.

### Will the picture be stretched?

No. It is cropped to the shape, never squeezed.

### Can it keep the face in the frame?

Yes. Turn on face placement and the frame follows the faces.

### Can I change the ratio without cropping?

Yes, by padding: use the resize settings or the Instagram page without cropping.

### Is quality lost?

No. The crop keeps the original resolution.

### Are my photos kept?

No. They are deleted from our server after processing.

### Can I set a ratio for many photos?

Yes. Each photo gets a frame of the chosen shape.
