How it works

  1. Add your images

Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

A header banner is the first thing a visitor sees, and it is often the heaviest picture on the page. Holding it to 85 KB keeps the top of the page quick without making it look dull.

The compressor keeps the best quality that fits within 85,000 bytes. If the banner is very wide, it also reduces the pixels, because displays rarely show more than about 1600 across for a header.

A wide picture has more pixels for the same height, so the budget per pixel is thin. Simple banners with large areas of one colour work well, and busy ones need a larger target.

Banner dimensions that work

A banner of 1600 by 400 pixels is 640,000 pixels. At 85 KB that is about one bit per pixel, which is enough for a clean banner with gradients and text if the subject is not too detailed. A photograph of a crowd at the same size would look soft.

Text on banners

Headlines baked into a banner are sensitive to compression. JPEG leaves a faint haze around letters. If the file reaches 85 KB with haze visible, switch to WebP, or put the headline in real page text and keep the banner for the picture alone.

Cropping for different screens

A wide banner gets cropped on a phone, so the part that matters should sit in the middle. Compress the version you will use on desktop, then make a narrower crop for phones that holds the main subject.

Gradients and banding

Banners often use a smooth colour gradient. Strong compression splits gradients into visible stripes. If you see stripes, raise the target to 120 KB or add a very slight texture to the gradient before you compress.

Parallax and background pictures

Pictures used as a page background are often scaled and moved as the reader scrolls. Compression artefacts then become more visible, because the eye follows the motion. Give a moving background a gentler target, around 120 KB, and keep 85 KB for static banners.

Preparing the source

Start from the sharpest original you have. A banner built from a blurry source cannot be rescued by any setting. If you can choose, use a picture with a clear subject and a calm area where the headline will sit.

A good source saves more than any slider in the compressor.

Comparing the two formats

Save the banner once as JPEG and once as WebP, then compare the sizes and the edges. For banners with smooth gradients WebP is usually smaller, while JPEG is supported almost everywhere. Choose whichever suits your site.

You can keep both results and serve them according to the browser.

Frequently asked questions

How wide should a header banner be?

1600 to 2000 pixels covers most desktop layouts. Wider adds weight without adding visible sharpness.

Should I use JPEG or WebP for a banner?

WebP is usually lighter. If the banner has a lot of text in the picture, test both and compare the edges.

Can I set a size between 85 KB and 100 KB?

Yes. Choose Custom in the Target size menu.

Does the tool crop the banner?

Not on its own. Use the crop tool first if you want a different shape.

Will my file be stored?

Uploads are deleted automatically. A result you keep as a link is removed after one hour.

Will the banner look fine on a tablet?

Yes, provided it is at least about 1600 pixels wide. Tablets show about that many pixels across in landscape.

Why is my banner under 85 KB?

A simple banner reaches its best quality below the target, and the tool does not add weight for no gain.

Can I set the banner to an exact width?

Yes. Enter the width in Resize, then compress to 85 KB, and the target applies to the final pixels.
