How it works

  1. Add your images

Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

WebP is already a modern, efficient format, usually 25 to 35% smaller than an equivalent JPEG at the same visual quality, so there is less room left to shrink it further than with older formats. Still, a WebP exported at a high quality setting from design software often has more headroom than one already optimised for the web.

If you need to share a WebP somewhere that still doesn't support it well, such as some older email clients, this tool can convert it to JPEG or PNG at the same time as compressing it. Pick the output format from the Format menu before adding your files.

Your file is uploaded over an encrypted connection and compressed on our own servers, and the result is deleted automatically within one hour. If you're exporting WebP from design software, try exporting at a higher quality than you think you need and compressing it here instead; you often end up with a smaller file and more control than the export dialog alone gives you.

Lossy and lossless WebP are two different codecs

The name WebP covers two ways of storing a picture. Lossy WebP works like JPEG with a newer engine: it predicts each block from its neighbours and stores only the difference, which is where the saving over JPEG comes from. Lossless WebP is closer to PNG and keeps every pixel. A file exported by a design tool can be either, and you cannot tell from the extension.

In Quality mode the output here is lossy, and the slider behaves much as it does for JPEG, with 75 to 85 a sensible range for photos. Switch to Lossless and the result is pixel-exact, which suits icons and interface graphics that were lossless to begin with.

Animated WebP stays animated

An animated WebP keeps all of its frames when you compress it or scale it down, so stickers and short loops come back still moving. Cropping or rotating is different: those return the first frame only, and the result carries a warning so the change does not go unnoticed. Smart mode does not search on animations. It uses a fixed quality of 80, since comparing every frame with the original would take far longer than the saving is worth.

When a WebP will not get smaller

A WebP that was already saved at a low quality has little left to give. Encoding it again at a higher setting produces a bigger file, and encoding at the same setting loses detail for almost no gain. When the result would not be smaller than what you uploaded, you get your own file back, marked as already optimised, so a good file is never swapped for a worse one. To go further you have two honest options: fewer pixels, with Resize, or AVIF, which is in the Format menu and often undercuts WebP on photographs.

Frequently asked questions

Is WebP supported everywhere?

All current browsers support WebP. A small number of older apps and email clients do not, which is why conversion to JPEG or PNG is offered.

Will compressing an already-small WebP help much?

Often only a little, since WebP is already efficient. Try a lower quality setting if the file must be smaller.

Does WebP support transparency?

Yes, and it is preserved through compression here.

Can I convert WebP to JPEG here?

Yes, choose JPEG from the Format menu; the background will be filled white where there was transparency.

Should I use lossless WebP for photos?

Rarely. A lossless photo is several times larger than a lossy one at quality 85, and the two look the same at normal size. Lossless earns its place on graphics with flat colour and sharp edges.

What is the largest WebP I can compress?

20 MB a file on the free plan and 200 MB on Pro. WebP itself stops at 16,383 pixels on a side, so nothing wider or taller can be saved in this format.
