# Deep fry an image

Give a picture the over-cooked meme look: blown-out colours, harsh edges and crunchy JPEG artefacts.

## How it works

1. **Add your images** Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.
2. **Pick a quality or a target size** Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.
3. **Download** Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

A deep-fried meme looks as if it has been saved, screenshotted and re-shared a hundred times: colours so strong they glow, edges sharpened into halos, and the blocky noise of a badly compressed JPEG. It started as an in-joke and became a style of its own for reaction images and absurd humour.

Add your picture and it comes out fried: contrast is raised, saturation pushed to the maximum and sharpening turned all the way up, then the result is saved as a JPEG at very low quality, which adds the crunchy artefacts. Every one of those settings sits in the panel, so you can fry it lighter or harder.

For the full effect, add bold text with the add text page first, then fry the picture with its caption, so the letters crackle too. Run the fried file through again for an extra-crispy result.

## How hard to fry

Lower the saturation and sharpening a little for a picture that is still recognisable; push the JPEG quality down further, below 10, for a heavily artefacted mess. Brightness and exposure in the same panel can blow out the highlights for the glowing look.

Pixelate, also in the panel, adds a low-resolution touch that suits some memes.

## Faces and emojis

Classic deep-fried memes often add glowing eyes or emojis before frying. Put them on with your usual editor or our text tool, then fry: the sharpening and colour boost make the additions look baked into the picture.

## Several pictures

Add a set of images and each is fried with the same recipe, handy for a series of reaction memes.

Change a slider once and every picture in the list is fried again with the new setting, so the whole series keeps the same look.

## Privacy

Your pictures are processed on our server and deleted once the fried versions exist.

## Sharing

A fried picture is usually small, because low-quality JPEGs take few bytes, so it sends quickly on any messaging app. Apps that recompress uploads will only add to the effect.

## Getting the original back

Frying cannot be undone on the downloaded file, so keep your original. To start over, add the original again and change the settings.

## Picking a base picture

Faces, pets and everyday objects with a clear outline fry best: the boosted edges and colours make them look absurdly intense. Busy group photos turn to noise quickly, so crop to one subject first.

## Using it responsibly

Deep frying is a joke format. Keep it to pictures you own or that are shared for fun, and leave out photos of people who would not want to be part of a meme.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does deep frying do?

It boosts contrast, saturation and sharpening, then saves at very low JPEG quality.

### Can I fry it harder?

Yes. Lower the JPEG quality or raise the other sliders.

### Can I add text first?

Yes. Use the add text page, then fry the result.

### Why is the file so small?

Low JPEG quality takes few bytes; that is part of the look.

### Is my picture stored?

No. It is deleted from our server once the fried version is made.

### Can I fry many pictures?

Yes. All of them get the same settings.

### Can I undo it?

Not on the downloaded file; keep the original.
