# Resize your photo for FPSC

Get the passport-size JPG under 30 kilobytes that the Federal Public Service Commission's online application asks for.

## How it works

1. **Add your images** Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.
2. **Pick a quality or a target size** Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.
3. **Download** Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

Pakistan's Federal Public Service Commission takes applications for its recruitments and for the CSS examination online, and asks for one picture: a recent passport-size photo in JPG format, smaller than 30 kilobytes. A phone photo is usually ten or a hundred times that size, and the upload is refused until it is brought down. This page does it in one step, keeping the face sharp.

Add your photo and frame your head and shoulders. The picture is made in a passport shape and its quality lowered just until it is under 30 kilobytes, so it looks as good as that limit allows. A tick shows when the file is inside the limit. You can switch on a white background if your wall is busy or dark.

The rule comes from the FPSC's guidelines for online application submission, linked on the page with the date they were read. The guidelines set no pixel size, so the size used here is our choice and is labelled as such.

## A photo that suits a formal application

The guidelines ask candidates to avoid informal pictures. Use a recent, front-facing photo with a plain background, in formal clothes, with your face clearly lit and nothing covering it. A selfie at arm's length usually distorts the face; ask someone to take it from a couple of metres away.

Open the downloaded JPG before uploading and check that the face is sharp and the background calm.

## Why 30 kilobytes is enough

A passport-size picture shown small on a screen needs few pixels. At the size used here, a well-lit photo fits under 30 kilobytes with good detail. If the result looks rough, the light was probably poor: take the photo again by a window rather than lowering the size further.

The page keeps lowering the quality only as far as it must, so a good photo keeps more detail than a fixed setting would give.

## When the upload appears

The FPSC application asks for the picture only in its second step, after the fee has been deposited against your PSID. Prepare the photo beforehand, so you can finish the form in one sitting once the fee is paid.

## The paper form

Some FPSC forms also ask for a printed photo pasted on paper. Print the same picture so both match; the printable sheet on our passport photo pages puts several copies on one 4 by 6 inch print.

## Frequently asked questions

### What pixel size does FPSC want?

The guidelines give only the file limit and format. The size used here is our choice.

### Is 30 KB the same as 30,000 bytes?

It can mean 30,000 or 30,720 bytes. The page keeps the file under 29,000 bytes, so it is under the limit either way.

### Does it work for CSS?

CSS applications are made through the same FPSC online system; check the current advertisement for your exam.

### Is my photo stored?

No. The picture is resized on our server and removed from it as soon as you have the JPG.

### Can I upload a PNG?

No: the guidelines accept JPG or JPEG only, which is what this page makes.

### Can I wear glasses?

The guidelines do not say; a clear, glare-free view of the eyes is safest.

### Do I need a signature file?

The online guidelines ask only for the picture; follow your advertisement if it asks for more.
