How it works

  1. Add your images

Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

JPG is the format upload forms ask for, and a GIF is frequently what you have: a picture saved from an old website, a frame of a reaction clip wanted as a thumbnail, a scanned drawing somebody stored in the wrong format years ago. This page turns the GIF into a JPG that goes wherever a photo goes.

A JPG is always a single still picture and never has transparency. So two things happen during conversion, and it is better to know them beforehand. From an animated GIF, only the first frame is used. And any transparent area is filled with a colour, white unless you pick another in the editor.

The page starts at quality 90, which keeps flat colour and sharp outlines reasonably clean. The file is uploaded over an encrypted connection, converted on our own servers and removed, with its result, within the hour.

When JPG is the right target, and when it is not

Some GIFs are photographs: a portrait, a product shot, a frame of film. They were forced into 256 colours when they became GIFs, and they look grainy as a result. For those, JPG is a natural home. The file gets smaller and is accepted everywhere a photo is.

Other GIFs are drawings: logos, icons, diagrams, pixel art, screenshots of text. JPEG is the weakest format for these, because it smears a faint haze along every hard edge. If the destination allows it, convert such a file to PNG instead, which copies it exactly. Use JPG for a drawing only when a form leaves you no choice, and keep the quality at 90 or above.

The dither pattern in old GIFs

To fake more than 256 colours, the software that made a GIF scattered dots of two colours next to each other, a technique called dithering. Look closely at a photographic GIF and you will see a fine speckle across skin and sky. A JPEG encoder treats that speckle as detail and spends bytes preserving it, so the JPG can come out larger than you expect and still look grainy.

There is a simple improvement. Reduce the picture a little in Resize, to 70 or 80 percent. Scaling averages neighbouring dots back into smooth tones, which is roughly what the picture looked like before it was dithered, and the JPG becomes both cleaner and much smaller.

Choosing the background for transparent GIFs

A GIF with a transparent background was made to sit on some particular page. Filled with white, a dark-coloured logo looks fine, while a white or pale one disappears altogether. Set the fill colour in the editor to match where the picture is going, or to contrast with the artwork if you only need to see it. Because GIF edges are hard, there is no soft blending into the new colour; a fringe of the original page colour around the artwork, if the GIF has one, will remain visible.

Frequently asked questions

Which frame of an animated GIF becomes the JPG?

The first one. The editor shows a warning that the animation was dropped. Choosing another frame is not possible here.

What colour replaces the transparent background?

White by default. The editor has a colour control for JPG output where you can set any other.

Will the JPG be smaller than the GIF?

For photographic GIFs, usually yes. For flat graphics it can be larger, and PNG is then the better choice.

Can I keep the animation?

Not as a JPG. Choose WebP in the Format menu for a moving picture that is much smaller than the GIF.

Does converting improve the colours?

No. The GIF's palette has already limited them, and the JPG reproduces what is there.

Can I convert a whole folder of GIFs?

Yes. Add up to twenty at once without an account and download the JPGs together as a ZIP.
