How it works

  1. Add your images

Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

PNG stores every pixel exactly, so once a JPEG has been converted it can be opened, edited and saved again without picking up a new layer of compression artefacts each time. That makes this conversion useful before repeated editing, for screenshots and diagrams that were saved as JPEG by mistake, and for forms or tools that only accept PNG uploads.

Converting does not restore detail the JPEG has already thrown away: blocky edges and colour banding in the source will be preserved faithfully, not repaired. Expect the PNG to be considerably larger than the JPEG, often several times, because lossless storage of photographic content is expensive.

This page starts at a quality setting that keeps the PNG lossless. If size matters more than exactness, lower the quality in the editor and the PNG is reduced to a limited colour palette, which shrinks graphics and flat artwork dramatically but can show banding in photos. Your JPEG is uploaded over an encrypted connection, converted on our own servers, and the result is deleted within one hour; no account is needed for up to twenty images at a time.

When a PNG copy of a JPG makes sense

The clearest case is a picture you are about to work on. Each time an image is saved as JPEG it is compressed afresh, and after five or six rounds of crop, save, adjust, save, the damage shows. Convert once to PNG, do all the editing on that, and export a JPEG only at the very end. The second case is annotation: arrows, labels and text added to a photo stay crisp in a PNG and gather grey smudges in a JPEG. The third is plain bureaucracy, a tool or a form that lists PNG as its only accepted type.

What the file size will be

Plan for a big file. A one-megapixel JPEG of 200 KB becomes a PNG of roughly 1.5 to 2 MB. A twelve-megapixel phone photo of 3 MB becomes 15 to 25 MB, more than many upload forms and mail servers accept. The JPEG had thrown away what the eye does not miss; the PNG must record every pixel of what is left, including the faint noise that compression itself introduced.

If the PNG is only a stepping stone in an edit, the size does not matter. If it has to be sent somewhere, reduce the dimensions in Resize first: half the width and height gives a quarter of the bytes.

Colour stays the same, with one footnote

For an ordinary photo the PNG shows exactly the picture the JPG showed, pixel for pixel. Recent phones can record a wider range of colour than the standard sRGB that the web is built on. Such photos are converted to standard sRGB on the way, so the PNG looks the same in every program, including the many that ignore colour profiles. The most saturated reds and greens of a wide-gamut original are brought just inside the standard range, a change few people could spot.

Frequently asked questions

Will converting to PNG improve my image quality?

No. It stops further quality loss, but detail the JPEG already removed cannot be brought back.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the JPG?

PNG is lossless, and storing a photo without loss takes far more space than JPEG's lossy compression.

Does the PNG get a transparent background?

No. JPEG has no transparency, so the PNG is fully opaque. Use the background remover to cut a subject out.

Can I make the PNG smaller?

Yes. Lower the quality setting in the editor to switch to a reduced colour palette, which works best for graphics.

Is PNG better than JPG for printing?

Not for a photo that already is a JPG. The PNG holds the same pixels, so the print is the same. PNG helps when the artwork has text or sharp lines and has not been through JPEG compression yet.

My screenshot was saved as JPG. Will converting clean it up?

No. The fuzz around the text is now part of the picture and the PNG keeps it. Take the screenshot again and save it as PNG from the start.
