How it works

  1. Add your images

Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

JPEG XL is a modern image format, standardised in 2022, that makes files noticeably smaller than JPG at the same quality and can also store pictures losslessly. Its weakness is support. Safari and Apple's systems open it; several other browsers, most phones' galleries, office programs and upload forms do not. When a .jxl file has to go somewhere that refuses it, convert it to JPG here.

The file is decoded with the reference decoder from the JPEG XL project and encoded as a JPG at the quality you choose, 90 by default. In the same editor you can resize, crop, or pick another output such as PNG or WebP. Converting is free and needs no account.

A JPG made from a JXL will usually be larger than the JXL it came from. That is not a fault of the conversion: it is the efficiency of the newer format showing. If the size matters more than compatibility, a WebP or AVIF made from the same file sits between the two.

Where JXL files come from

Recent iPhones can save ProRAW pictures with JPEG XL compression. Some cameras, image editors and download sites offer it. Photographers use it to archive large collections, because it can repack an existing JPG about a fifth smaller with no loss at all. If someone has sent you a .jxl, one of these is probably the source.

Things JPG cannot carry over

JPEG XL does several things a JPG cannot. It has transparency; in the JPG, see-through areas are filled with a background colour, white unless you choose another. It can hold high dynamic range and wide colour; the JPG is a standard picture in sRGB with eight bits a channel. It can be animated; the first frame is used, and you are told.

When transparency or exact pixels matter, convert to PNG and not to JPG. The format setting in the editor does that.

JPGs that were repacked as JXL

A special feature of JPEG XL is storing an existing JPG in a way that can be turned back into the identical JPG file, byte for byte. This page does not perform that reconstruction: it decodes the picture and encodes a new JPG. The picture looks the same; the file is not the original. For an archive where the original bytes matter, use the JPEG XL project's own tools.

Choosing the quality

The JXL has already been through one round of compression, in most cases. Encoding it as a JPG is a second round, so do not go low. Quality 90 keeps the second loss invisible. If the destination has a strict size limit, use the target-size mode, which finds the highest quality that fits.

Frequently asked questions

What opens a JXL file?

Safari, Apple's Preview and Photos, and a number of image editors. Many other programs do not yet, which is the usual reason to convert.

Is quality lost when converting JXL to JPG?

A little, as with any JPG encoding. At quality 90 the difference is not visible.

What happens to a transparent JXL?

JPG has no transparency, so those areas are filled with the background colour. Choose PNG to keep them.

Can it convert an animated JXL?

The first frame is converted, and a note says the animation was dropped.

Why is the JPG bigger than the JXL?

JPEG XL compresses more efficiently. The same picture needs more bytes as a JPG.

Can I convert JPG to JXL here?

Yes. Open the compressor, drop the JPG in and choose JPEG XL as the output format. Chrome and Firefox do not show JXL files yet, so the preview keeps the original picture on screen.
