Many applications for a passport, a visa or an ID card ask for a photo on a plain, light background, and a photo taken at home rarely has one. This tool removes whatever is behind you and fills it with even white. The page opens the editor with a white background and JPG output, the format most online application forms accept.
Start with a photo that already follows the usual rules: face the camera, keep a neutral expression, use even light with no shadow on the face, and leave space around the head. The tool changes only the background. It does not crop to a required size, check the position of the head, or measure anything; use the crop and resize tools for the dimensions your application asks for.
Please read this before relying on the result. Requirements differ from country to country and change over time. Some authorities ask for white, others for light grey or off-white, and some do not accept photos that have been digitally altered at all. An automatic cut-out can also leave a soft edge around hair, which an official check may reject. We make no claim that a photo made here will be accepted. Check the current rules of the authority you are applying to. Photos are uploaded encrypted, processed on our own servers, and deleted within one hour.
Taking the source photo at home
The cut-out can only be as good as the picture you give it. Ask someone else to take the photo, or prop the phone at the height of your eyes; a selfie at arm's length distorts the face, with the nose larger and the ears smaller than they are. Use the main camera on the back of the phone from about a metre and a half away. Stand facing a window in daylight so the light falls evenly on both cheeks, and half a metre in front of the wall.
Switch off portrait mode, beauty filters and any skin smoothing. They change the face itself, and that is the one alteration no authority tolerates.
What the white background does and does not fix
Everything behind you is replaced: the wallpaper, the door frame, the shadow your head threw on the wall. What belongs to you stays as it was photographed. A shadow under the chin or down one side of the face is still there, glare on glasses is still there, and so is a head that is slightly turned. Automated checks look at those things as closely as they look at the background.
Look hard at the hair as well. Loose strands against a patterned wall are where an automatic cut-out is weakest, and a soft or uneven outline around the head can be read as a sign of editing. Hair that is tied back or neatly combed gives a noticeably cleaner edge.
Finishing the file, and when to use a photo booth
After the background come the dimensions and the file size. Crop to the shape your application asks for, set the pixel size in the resize tool, and bring the file under the limit with the compressor's page for passport applications, in that order. All three are on this site and work on the JPG you download here.
Sometimes the better answer is not to do this at all. If your authority rejects digitally altered photos, if the photo is of a baby who will not hold still, or if two attempts have already been refused, a photo booth or a photographer who knows the current standard costs less than another rejected application.
Frequently asked questions
Will my photo be accepted?
We cannot say. Rules differ by country, and some authorities refuse edited photos. Check their current requirements.
Does the tool crop to passport size?
No. It changes only the background. Use the crop and resize tools for the dimensions.
My country asks for light grey, not white.
Choose the custom colour in the editor and set the grey your authority describes.
Is my photo kept?
No. The original is not stored and the result is deleted within one hour.
Can I use a selfie?
It is a poor starting point. The short distance distorts the proportions of the face, and many authorities advise against selfies for that reason. Have someone take the photo from further away.
Does the tool remove a shadow on my face?
No. It replaces the background and nothing else. Shadows on the wall behind you disappear with the wall; shadows on your face have to be avoided when the photo is taken.
