The Federal Police document list for Brazilian passports asks only one group of applicants to bring a photo: children under five. They must bring a recent 5x7 photo with a white background, and the child must still attend the appointment in person.

This page makes that photo. The page writes the size as 5x7 without a unit; in Brazil that is the usual name for a photo of 5 by 7 centimetres, so the preset uses 50 by 70 millimetres, saved as 591 by 827 pixels at 300 DPI. Two copies fit on a 4 by 6 inch sheet if you want a spare.

Applications at Brazilian consulates abroad follow their own rules, which can differ from these. The table links the Federal Police page we read and the date.

Why the photo can be refused

The Federal Police list gives three reasons for refusal. The face must not be partly covered by accessories, ornaments or decorations, so take off headbands, bows and hats. The photo must still identify the child, which a picture of a baby taken months ago may no longer do. And closed eyes are refused, unless the applicant is a newborn.

Photographing a baby or toddler

A white background is the hard part with small children. Lay a baby on a plain white sheet and photograph from directly above, or seat a toddler on the lap of an adult covered with a white sheet, keeping the adult's hands and face out of the frame. Take many shots and choose one with open eyes and the whole face visible.

Use daylight from a window rather than a flash, which can startle a child and leave red eyes.

Framing the picture

The Federal Police page does not give a head size for this photo. A sensible framing shows the whole head and the top of the shoulders, with the face upright and in the centre. Drag the frame until the head fills a good part of the height, then check the result at full size.

Glasses on a small child often reflect the light from a window, so a picture without them is usually clearer.

Printing the 5 × 7

Have the file printed at a photo lab or kiosk on photographic paper. Send the single photo if the lab accepts a custom size, or use the sheet option and cut the two copies apart. Keep the print flat and clean so it reaches the appointment undamaged.

When the child turns five

The rule is tied to age at the time of application. A child who has already turned five is no longer covered by this item of the document list, so check the age on the day of the appointment before you print anything. If the appointment falls close to the fifth birthday, ask the Federal Police which rule applies on that day.

Frequently asked questions

Who needs to bring a photo for a Brazilian passport?

Applicants under five years old, according to the Federal Police document list.

What background is needed?

White.

Does the child have to attend?

Yes. The page states that the child's presence at the appointment is still mandatory.

Can the photo be older?

It must be recent. It is refused if the child can no longer be identified from it because of the time that has passed.

Are closed eyes accepted?

Only for newborns. For every other child, photos with closed eyes are refused.

Can the child wear a bow or headband?

Not if it partly covers the face. The Federal Police list refuses such photos.

Is this page useful for adults?

No. The Federal Police document list asks only children under five to bring a photo, so this preset is meant for them.
