Canadian passport photos are larger than most. Canada.ca states that printed photos must be 50 millimetres wide by 70 millimetres high, which it also gives as 2 inches wide by 2¾ inches high. For online renewals a digital photo is used instead, with its own rules: a JPG in a 3:2 shape, held upright, of at least 1,800 pixels high by 1,200 pixels wide.
Both are presets on this page. The printed preset makes 591 by 827 pixels at 300 DPI, which prints at 50 by 70 millimetres. The digital preset makes a 1,200 by 1,800 pixel JPG and keeps it between 200 KB and 5 MB, the band Canada.ca gives. The source also sets an upper size of 4,500 pixels high by 3,000 wide, which this file is well under.
The table below repeats what the government page states, with the date we read it. Beyond the numbers, Canada has rules about how the picture is taken and presented that this tool cannot check or satisfy. Treat this page as a way to get the dimensions right, and the official page as the authority.

Check the official requirements before you submit. We resize to the numbers shown; we do not check face position, expression, glasses, lighting or background rules.
Face size, as Canada.ca gives it
For printed photos the source says the face must measure between 31 millimetres and 36 millimetres from chin to crown. On the 827 pixel tall file that is about 366 to 425 pixels. For digital photos it gives a proportion instead: the face, chin to top of head, should take up between 45 and 50 percent of the photo's height, which is 810 to 900 pixels of the 1,800.
The two rules do not describe the same framing, so do not reuse one crop for the other. Select the preset you need and position the frame again.
Background and lighting
Canada.ca asks for a plain white or light-coloured background, with clear contrast between the background and your face. A cream wall in soft daylight usually does. If you switch on "Replace the background", the fill colour defaults to white; whether a digitally altered photo is acceptable is something to confirm on the official page.
Printing the 50 by 70 size
Because the photo is large, only two copies fit on a 4 by 6 inch print. Switch on the printable sheet, print it at actual size, and check one copy with a ruler: 50 millimetres across, 70 down. Use photographic paper; the source specifies plain, high-quality photographic paper for prints.
Resolution of the print
The print file has 591 by 827 pixels because that is 50 by 70 millimetres at 300 dots per inch. If your photographer or print shop wants a higher resolution, choose the custom size, enter 50 and 70 millimetres, and type 600 DPI. The print stays the same size and the file grows to 1,181 by 1,654 pixels.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Canadian passport photo size in inches?
2 inches wide by 2¾ inches high, which is how Canada.ca expresses 50 by 70 millimetres.
How many pixels does the digital photo need?
At least 1,800 high by 1,200 wide and no more than 4,500 by 3,000, in a 3:2 shape. This page makes 1,200 × 1,800.
What file type and size does the online renewal accept?
A .jpeg or .jpg file between 200 KB and 5 MB, according to Canada.ca. The digital preset is locked to JPG for that reason.
My 1,200 × 1,800 photo is under 200 KB. Is that a problem?
The preset sets 200 KB as the minimum, so a lighter file is padded up to it without changing the image.
Can I use this for a child's passport?
The dimensions are the same for adult and child passports on the page we read. Other rules for children are set out on Canada.ca.
How many copies fit on a 4 × 6 sheet?
Two, side by side, with 2 millimetres between them and a grey outline to cut along.
