Croatia's Ministry of the Interior publishes one guide for the photos on all its electronic documents, the passport included. It was written in 2013 and is still on the ministry's website. The format section is plain: the photo must be 35 millimetres wide and 45 millimetres high, and no older than six months.

On this page the preset produces 413 by 531 pixels at 300 DPI, which prints at exactly 35 by 45 millimetres, and the sheet option lays out eight copies on a 4 by 6 inch print for a photo lab.

The table shows the size and background with the date we read the guide. The guide also contains a template for checking head size and many example photos of what fails, which the next sections summarise.

Check the official requirements before you submit. We resize to the numbers shown; we do not check face position, expression, glasses, lighting or background rules.

The head takes about two thirds

From the chin to the crown, the head should take up about two thirds of the picture and must not be taller than 36 millimetres. The guide's template sets the lower limit at 31.5 millimetres for people over 11 and 22.5 millimetres for younger children. On the saved file, 31.5 to 36 millimetres is roughly 372 to 425 pixels of the 531 pixel height.

Hair may stick out beyond the largest outline, but the edge of the head, where it would be without hair, must stay inside. The distance between the centres of the eyes must be at least 8 millimetres, ideally 10.

Light grey, or white?

The guide's background section asks for a plain light background, ideally light grey, with enough contrast against the face and hair, no pattern and no shadow. A note on the template page says neutral, preferably white. Both describe a pale, even backdrop; light grey matches the main rule, so that is the colour "Replace the background" uses for this preset.

Only the person being photographed may appear. No other people and no objects.

Glasses and head coverings

Eyes must be clearly recognisable. Reflections on the lenses, tinted lenses and sunglasses are not allowed, and the rim or frame must not cover the eyes. Head coverings are not allowed, except for religious reasons, and then the face must be recognisable from the bottom of the chin to the forehead without shadows.

Paper and print quality

The guide asks for high quality, glossy, smooth paper without a surface texture such as a honeycomb pattern, and a high print quality. Scratches, stains, stamp marks and fold lines are refused, and colours should look natural, without red eyes. A lab print from the file made here has the right size; the paper is the lab's choice, so ask for glossy.

Do not mirror, stretch or otherwise change the proportions of the image. The guide names these explicitly, including making the head look narrower.
