Borger.dk, the Danish public information portal, lists the photo requirements on its page about applying for or renewing a passport. The photo must be undamaged and look like you, measure 35 by 45 millimetres, and show the head at 30 to 36 millimetres tall, taken straight from the front with the face and the top of the shoulders.

This page opens the photo maker with that size, saving 413 by 531 pixels at 300 DPI. Eight copies fit on a 4 by 6 inch sheet if you switch the sheet option on.

The table shows the size and background with the date we read borger.dk. The page links on to the police's own examples of good and bad photos, which are worth a look before you take yours.

Check the official requirements before you submit. We resize to the numbers shown; we do not check face position, expression, glasses, lighting or background rules.

Head height: 30 to 36 millimetres

That range is measured from the chin to the top of the head. On a 45 millimetre print it means the head fills two thirds or more of the height, close to four fifths at the upper end. On the 531 pixel file, aim for a head between roughly 354 and 425 pixels tall.

Leave a little space above the hair and below the chin so the shoulders show, as the rules ask.

A light background without motifs

The background must be light and free of shadows or motifs. A plain pale wall works, as long as nothing hangs on it and you stand far enough away that your shadow does not land on it. A door, a picture frame or a patterned curtain behind you counts as a motif.

If your wall is not suitable, "Replace the background" fills it with a light grey for this preset. Look at the hairline afterwards and retake the photo if the edge looks cut out.

Face, eyes and glasses

The face must be evenly lit. Both eyes must be fully visible with the gaze directed at the camera, and the mouth closed. Glasses must not be tinted and must not reflect, which usually means tilting them slightly or turning off the flash. If the reflection will not go away, take the glasses off for the photo.

Religious head coverings

A head covering may only be worn for religious reasons, and then the forehead, cheekbones and chin must be visible. Anything else on the head, from a cap to a hair band that hides the forehead, should come off for the photo.

Fingerprints and children

Borger.dk also explains that new passports carry fingerprints, except passports for children under 12. The page we read gives no separate photo rules for children, so prepare a child's photo to the same size and background.

Where to get it printed

A photo lab or kiosk prints the sheet as an ordinary 4 by 6 inch photo. Ask for no resizing, and cut along the thin gaps between the copies. One copy should measure 35 by 45 millimetres with a ruler.
