Greece's National Passport and Secure Document Center sets the photo rules, and its page was last updated in July 2026. A passport photo must be a recent colour photograph, taken within the last six months, following ICAO document 9303, with the person in civilian clothing. Where a printed photo is used, it measures 40 by 60 millimetres without a frame, larger and taller than the European 35 by 45.
This preset makes that print. Because the centre says printed photos from a digital camera must be at least 1200 dpi, the file is saved at 1200 DPI: 1890 by 2835 pixels, which prints at exactly 40 by 60 millimetres. Four copies fit on a 4 by 6 inch sheet.
Read the section below on when a print is still used, because most applications made inside Greece are now digital. The table shows the size and background with the date we read the centre's page.

Digital in Greece, print or upload abroad
Inside Greece, the photo is submitted digitally through the myPhoto service on the gov.gr portal; printed photos were accepted at the latest until 31 January 2026. Applying abroad, you either upload the photo to the foreign ministry's digital service for consular applications or hand in a print on analogue photographic paper. Some consulates have equipment to take the photo on the spot.
myPhoto has its own digital file specifications in a separate document, which this preset does not cover. Use this page for the printed photo.
Light grey, close to RGB 190
The background must be uniform, without patterns, shadows or objects, and light. The centre goes further than most countries and names a preferred value: grey at RGB 190, 190, 190, give or take 10. That is a mid-light grey, darker than many people expect. The edge between head and background must be distinct everywhere, though bushy hair is acceptable.
For this preset, "Replace the background" fills with exactly that grey. A real wall photographed in even light is still the better start; check that no shadow falls behind the head.
Print quality the centre checks
The print must be on high quality white photographic paper, not watercoloured or embossed, and must not show dots. Household inkjet and laser printers are excluded. The centre even describes a test: pressed against glass, the paper should not show grey spots known as Newton rings. Take the file to a photo lab that prints on real photographic paper.
Face, eyes and expression
The whole face must be clear, from the jaw to the forehead and from one ear to the other, with no shadows or shine. Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression, eyes normally open and mouth closed; a closed-mouth smile is not recommended. The middle of the mouth and the nose should sit on the vertical centre line of the picture.
Glasses must not reflect and the frame must not cover the eyes; the centre recommends not wearing them where possible. Head covers are allowed for religious reasons only, with the face visible from jaw to forehead and ear to ear.
Alone in the picture
No other people or objects may appear: no backs of chairs, toys or dolls. For a small child, this means photographing them without anyone holding them in view, against the same light grey background.
