Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

Hong Kong's Immigration Department uses a larger photo than many places: 40 millimetres wide by 50 millimetres high, with a plain white background and the head 32 to 36 millimetres from chin to crown. For passport applications made online or through its mobile app, it also accepts a digital photo, a JPEG of at least 1200 by 1600 pixels and no more than 5 MB.

This page has both presets. The digital one saves exactly 1200 by 1600 pixels as a JPEG. The print one makes 472 by 591 pixels at 300 DPI, which prints at 40 by 50 millimetres, and four copies fit on a 4 by 6 inch sheet.

The table shows the figures we read on the Immigration Department page and the date. The page says that uploading successfully does not mean the photo has been accepted; the department may still ask for another.

Head size on both versions

Chin to crown should measure 32 to 36 millimetres, with sufficient headroom above. On the print file that is roughly 378 to 426 of its 591 pixels. On the 1600 pixel digital file, the same proportion is about 1024 to 1152 pixels, so the head fills most of the height in both.

Clothes and make-up

The department asks you not to wear head dress when the photo is taken, and to avoid heavy make-up and clothing that is overly dark or overly light. Very light clothes merge with the white background; very dark ones make the face look washed out by comparison. Mid tones work best.

For the background, use a plain white wall or a white sheet, evenly lit.

Why photos are rejected

The page lists faults that make a photo unacceptable: a person who is not centred, a glasses frame across the eyes, hair across the eyes or eyebrows, flash reflection on the face or glasses, shadow, and a photo that is too light or too dark. A window in front of you and a white wall a little way behind usually avoids all of them.

Handling the printed photo

Do not fold, staple or write on the back of the photo, or attach it to the form with a paper clip. Otherwise it becomes unsuitable for engraving onto the passport's data page. An application sent by post or dropped in with a substandard photo will not be processed and is returned to the applicant.

Laser engraving

The department personalises the passport's data page by laser engraving, and the quality of the image in the passport depends on the quality and colour of the original photo you provide. That is a good reason to start from a sharp, well lit picture and not to compress it more than needed.
