Poland writes its passport photo rules into law. The passport documents act of 27 January 2022, quoted by the Lublin Voivodeship Office, says the photo measures 35 by 45 millimetres and is taken against a plain light background, with even lighting, good sharpness and natural skin colour. Applications with a photo that does not comply are not accepted.

The preset produces 413 by 531 pixels at 300 DPI, so a lab print comes out at 35 by 45 millimetres, and the sheet option fits eight on a 4 by 6 inch print.

The table shows the size and background and the date we read the page. The act also describes framing, expression and the exceptions for glasses and head coverings, set out below.

Requirements checked on October 15, 2026. Official source

Check the official requirements before you submit. We resize to the numbers shown; we do not check face position, expression, glasses, lighting or background rules.

From the top of the head to the shoulders

The photo shows the person from the top of the head to the upper part of the shoulders, so that the face fills 70 to 80 percent of the picture. The face is shown symmetrically along the vertical axis and must leave no reasonable doubt about who it is. On the 531 pixel tall file, 70 to 80 percent means the face spans roughly 372 to 425 pixels.

Expression and eyes

The person looks straight ahead with a natural expression and closed mouth. Hair must not cover the face, and the eyebrows, eyes and pupils must be visible. The photo must have been taken no earlier than six months before the application is submitted.

Because the photo may be at most six months old, do not prepare it too early if your application is still months away.

Dark glasses only with a certificate

As a rule, the photo shows no head covering and no glasses with dark lenses. Someone with a visual impairment may submit a photo with dark lenses, together with a disability certificate. A person who covers their head in line with their religion may wear the covering if the face is fully visible, and must then submit a certificate of membership of a religious community registered in Poland.

A head covering is also possible when the person shows it is needed because of past medical treatment or an accident.

A plain light background at home

The act names no colour, only plain and light. A pale wall without patterns, lit evenly so no shadow falls behind the head, meets that wording. If your wall is busy, "Replace the background" fills with light grey for this preset; check the outline of the hair before printing, since the photo must show your face beyond doubt.

Exceptions for small children and health

The photo of a child up to the age of five, of a person with a disability certificate, or of someone whose health does not allow the requirements to be met may depart from them. The act says so explicitly, which helps with toddlers who will not sit still or look at the camera. The frame on this page stays at 35 by 45 millimetres either way.
