For a Slovenian passport, identity card or driving licence there are two ways to supply a photo. The Ministry of the Interior's leaflet, published on gov.si, explains that you may attach a photograph made in the classic form, 3.5 by 4.5 centimetres, or present a confirmation with a reference number from an e-photographer. This page is for the first of the two.

It opens the photo maker on 35 by 45 millimetres. The picture you add is cropped to that shape and saved at 413 by 531 pixels with 300 DPI recorded, ready to be printed at its true size. The leaflet describes the e-photographer system as a way of sending photographs electronically, so decide which of the two routes suits you before you start.

Two statements in the leaflet deserve attention if you make the photo yourself. It says the photograph must show the person's true appearance and must not be retouched, and that it must not be made with a self-service photo device. Cropping and resizing change neither your appearance nor the pixels of your face, but replacing the background is an edit, so we advise against using that switch for this document.

What the leaflet says about paper and colour

The photograph must be made on white, thin, glossy photographic paper, in the size 35 by 45 millimetres, and it may be black-and-white or colour. Few countries still allow black-and-white, so this is worth knowing if you have a good monochrome portrait. The quality must be suitable for biometric processing, which rules out blurred or low-resolution pictures.

A grey background, matched to your hair

The leaflet describes the ideal background as grey and in contrast with the face, hair and clothing. For light hair it recommends a medium grey, and for dark hair a light grey. The background must be free of patterns and shadows. This is easiest to achieve with a sheet of grey card behind you and daylight from the front.

Since retouching is not permitted, get the background right when you take the picture. A real grey wall is the reliable answer here.

Children

The leaflet has a section on photographing children. No other people may appear in the background, and children should be photographed with a closed mouth and without toys near the face. For children up to the age of ten it allows some deviations in the height of the face. The size of the photo itself stays 35 by 45 millimetres.

Printing the classic form

Switch on the printable sheet and eight copies are laid out on one 10 by 15 centimetre print. At the kiosk, choose glossy paper, since the leaflet asks for it, and printing at actual size. Measure a copy once it is cut out: 35 millimetres across and 45 down. Plain office paper from a home printer does not meet the requirement for photographic paper.

Frequently asked questions

What size is the photo for a Slovenian passport?

35 by 45 millimetres, which the ministry's leaflet also writes as 3.5 by 4.5 centimetres. This page saves it as 413 by 531 pixels with 300 DPI recorded.

Do I need a printed photo at all?

Not necessarily. The leaflet describes the e-photographer system, where a photographer sends the picture electronically and you bring only a reference number.

How old is the source for this page?

The leaflet is dated June 2009 and is still published on gov.si. We read it on the date shown in the table, so ask your administrative unit if anything is unclear.

Yes, according to the leaflet, which allows black-and-white or colour.

Can I use a photo booth picture?

The leaflet says the photograph must not be made with a self-service photo device.

Which documents does the leaflet apply to?

Biometric passports, identity cards and driving licences, as its title says.
