Turkey uses a bigger biometric photo than most of Europe. The Consulate General in New York, in its instructions for passport and Turkish identity card applications, states that the photo must measure 50 by 60 millimetres and that the background must be white and without a pattern. The preset on this page uses exactly that format.

The saved file is 591 by 709 pixels at 300 DPI, which prints at 50 by 60 millimetres. Because the photo is large, a 4 by 6 inch sheet holds two copies with room to trim around each.

The table shows the size and background, the day we read them and the link. The instructions go on to cover lighting, glasses and head coverings, summarised below.

Check the official requirements before you submit. We resize to the numbers shown; we do not check face position, expression, glasses, lighting or background rules.

Do not let it be cut to 35 × 45

The General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs warns on its own page about one mistake in particular. Photographers used to European documents may trim the print to 35 by 45 millimetres, and the directorate asks applicants to remind them not to. A photo of a different size or background can stop the application, or get the card cancelled at quality control so that you have to apply again.

If you print the sheet at a kiosk, cut along the gap around each copy and check one with a ruler before you go.

White, with no shadow

The background must be white and plain, with no shadow falling on it. The lighting should be neither too bright nor too dark, and the whole face must be visible. Sharpness and contrast should be set correctly by the photographer, the picture must not look hazy, and the focus must be entirely on the face.

Face, eyes and posture

The head must not tilt forward or turn to either side, the expression must be neutral and the mouth closed. The eyes must be open and focused on the camera, and hair must not cover the face. The photo should come from a camera with high image quality and be printed on good paper; damaged, crumpled or creased prints are not accepted.

Glasses, hats and children

Only prescription glasses are allowed, and they must not hide the eyes; sunglasses and similar accessories are not. Neither are hats or other accessories that hide the hair or face. The photo must not be older than six months, and the same rules apply to children and babies.

Taking the file to a photographer

The directorate's page ends by noting that a biometric photo can be taken at any photographer. If you would rather use your own picture, bring this file and ask for a 4 by 6 inch print without resizing. The two copies on the sheet are already at 50 by 60 millimetres, so the only work left is cutting them out.
