How it works

  1. Add your images

Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

The two-inch square is the other big family of ID photos, used where sizes are given in inches. This page opens the photo maker with a square frame. Drop in a picture, slide the square over the face and shoulders, and download a file of 600 by 600 pixels that prints exactly two inches wide and two inches tall.

A square is forgiving to crop from a phone picture, because nothing has to be squeezed, only cut. Portrait or landscape originals both work. What matters is that the original has room above the hair and below the chin, since a square shows less of the body than a tall rectangle and tempts people to stand too close.

Online forms that ask for this size usually name a pixel range and a file weight as well. Both can be set here: the custom size takes any square pixel count, and the KB fields hold the file between a minimum and a maximum. The rules about how large the head must appear inside the square differ between authorities and are not checked by this tool.

Two inches, 51 millimetres, 600 pixels

Two inches are 50.8 millimetres, which most guides round to 51. At the standard print resolution of 300 dots per inch, two inches hold 600 dots, so the file is 600 pixels on each side. A form that states its own pixel size, say 1,000 by 1,000, can be matched by switching to the custom size and choosing pixels as the unit.

Getting the square right

Place the frame so the eyes sit a little above the middle of the square. In a correctly framed two-inch photo there is a clear gap between the hair and the top edge, and the shoulders reach the bottom. If you wear your hair high, give it room; a square cut through a hairstyle is a common reason for a retake.

Use a plain wall in daylight, switch off the flash, and ask someone else to take the picture from about four feet away. The background can be replaced with white afterwards, but even lighting on the face cannot be added later.

Two to a sheet

On a 4 by 6 inch print, two copies of a two-inch photo fit side by side with a margin all round. Switch on the printable sheet to get that layout as one image, order it as an ordinary 4 by 6 print, and cut the two squares out along the grey outlines. Tell the kiosk not to crop or zoom, so the squares keep their size.

Frequently asked questions

How many pixels is a 2 × 2 inch photo?

600 × 600 at 300 DPI, which is what this page makes. At 150 DPI it would be 300 × 300, and at 600 DPI 1,200 × 1,200.

Can I make the file smaller than a given size, such as 240 KB?

Yes. Type the limit in the maximum field. The JPG quality is lowered until the file fits, while the picture stays 600 pixels square.

My picture is not square. Will it be distorted?

No. The square frame cuts a part out of the picture; the rest is discarded and nothing is stretched.

Is the white background option safe to use?

It produces a clean, even white behind you. Whether an edited background is permitted is a rule of the authority you apply to, so read its guidance.

Does a JPG or a PNG work better?

JPG, in nearly every case. It is what upload forms expect, and it is far lighter. Choose PNG only when your form asks for it.

Can I get the square at a higher resolution?

Yes. Under the custom size, enter 2 by 2 inches and type the DPI you need; 600 DPI gives a 1,200 pixel square that still prints two inches wide.
