A grid is the plainest way to show several photos together, and it works because nothing competes with anything else. Every photo gets a cell of the same size, set in rows with the same space around each one.

Add up to nine pictures and the grid decides the rows for you. Four photos make two rows of two, five make three over two, and nine fill three rows of three. A last row with fewer photos shares its width among them.

When you press the button, the photos travel to our server once, the grid is drawn there and the result comes back as a JPEG, PNG or WebP. After that we keep neither your photos nor the grid.

Getting a tidy grid

Choose photos of similar brightness and colour. A grid makes differences easy to see, so one dark picture among bright ones will stand out more than it did alone.

Use an even number of pictures if you can. Four, six or nine fill the grid completely, while five or seven leave a short last row.

A small gap with a background that matches your page looks calm. A wider gap with a strong colour turns the grid into a frame for each photo.

Settings worth trying

Rounded corners give a softer look and suit casual pictures. Keep them square for a documentary or product feel.

Pick the whole picture option when a photo has something at its edge that must not be lost, such as a face near a corner or a line of text.

Pick the square size for a feed that shows pictures in squares. Pick portrait if the grid will fill a phone screen, and story for a full screen vertical post.

Using the result

A grid you make for sharing is best as a JPEG. For a picture that you will edit again later, save a PNG, which keeps every pixel as it is.

The file is made large, so it stays sharp when a site shows it at a reduced size. If it is too heavy to send, run it through the image compressor afterwards.

Ideas for what to make

A grid suits a set of product shots, a month of photos from the same place or the steps of a recipe. A reader sees the whole set at once without having to click through.

It also works as a contact sheet. Put your candidates in the grid, look at them together and choose the one to edit, before spending time on any of them.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the last row wider?

When the photos do not fill the last row, the ones that are there share the whole width. That avoids an empty hole at the end of the grid.

Can I leave out the gap?

Yes. Set the space between pictures to zero and the photos touch, with no border at all around the grid.

What is the smallest grid?

Two photos, side by side in one row. For a single photo with a border, the resize tool is the better choice.

Will it keep my photo's colours?

Yes. Pictures are converted to the standard colour space used on the web, so they look the same in the grid as they do on your screen.

Can I use pictures from my phone?

Yes. Photos from a phone camera work, including HEIC ones from an iPhone, and the upright position the phone recorded is respected.

Does the order of the list matter?

Yes. The photos fill the grid from left to right, one row after another, in the order of the list. Use the arrows to change who stands where, and check the sketch before you make the grid.
