# Check a photo against the requirements

Find out before you submit whether your photo has the size, weight, format and background the application asks for.

## How it works

1. **Add your images** Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.
2. **Pick a quality or a target size** Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.
3. **Download** Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

Online applications reject photos for reasons that are hard to see by eye: a picture a few pixels off the required size, a file a little over the limit, a PNG where a JPEG was asked for, or a wall that photographs grey instead of white. Each rejection costs a day or a fee. This checker measures your photo and compares it with the rules, one line per rule, with a tick or a warning.

Choose the country document you are applying for, and its rules from our presets are used: those were read from the official page on the date shown on that country's photo page. For an exam or job form that is not in the list, choose your own rules and type the width, height and file sizes from its instructions. Fields you leave empty are not checked.

The measurement runs on our server: the face detector counts faces, and the background is sampled above and beside the head. The photo is deleted straight afterwards.

## What each check means

Pixel size compares the width and height with the size asked for, or with the range where a source allows one. File size compares the weight in kilobytes with the minimum and maximum. Format looks at what the file really is, not at its name. Background must be plain, and white or light where the rule says so. One face fails when no face, or more than one, is found.

When a rule is not met, the link under the result opens the photo maker for the same size, which fixes size, weight and format in one go and can replace the background.

## What the checker cannot judge

Many requirements are about the person, not the file: a neutral expression, eyes open and visible, no glasses or glare, the head straight and the right share of the frame, even light without shadows. Those still need a careful look, and the official page usually shows examples of good and bad photos. A pass here means the measurable part is right.

Light matters most of all: a face lit from one side, or a shadow on the wall behind, is the most common reason a photo that passes every number is still turned down at the counter.

## Checking a signature or a scan

With your own rules you can check any picture a form asks for. For a signature, type its width, height and KB range and switch off the face check. The background check works on signatures too, as long as you choose white or light.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does a pass guarantee the photo is accepted?

No. It confirms the rules that can be measured. Officials also judge expression, lighting and position, and the rules can change, so read the official page too.

### Where do the preset rules come from?

Each country preset was read from the authority's own page on the date given on that country's photo page, which links to the source.

### Why does my white wall fail the background check?

Indoor light often makes a white wall look grey or yellow in a photo. More light behind the person, or the photo maker's background replacement, usually fixes it.

### Is my photo stored?

No. It is measured on our server and deleted at once. We do not keep it or pass it to anyone.

### Can I check a HEIC photo from an iPhone?

Yes. Your browser converts it first, and the checker then reports the format as JPEG, which is what it would be uploaded as.

### Can I use this for a photo I am going to print?

Yes, for the pixels, the background and the face. A printed photo's size on paper also depends on the print itself, so check it with a ruler once printed.
