How it works
Add your images
Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.
Pick a quality or a target size
Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.
Download
Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.
This tool finds the subject of a photo and removes everything behind it, using an AI model that runs on our own servers. Drop in a portrait, a product photo, or a logo, and it produces a cut-out with the background gone. Nothing has to be downloaded or installed first, and you do not need a powerful computer or a particular browser, because the work is done on our side; no sign-up is needed either.
Once the background is gone, choose what replaces it: leave it transparent for a PNG you can place on anything, or fill it with white, black, or any colour you pick. The edge feather slider softens the cut-out's outline by a pixel or two, which helps it sit naturally over a new background instead of looking pasted on. Download each image on its own, or grab the whole batch as a single ZIP file.
remove.bg has announced that from 1 December 2026 its background removal moves to Leonardo.Ai, which is part of Canva. This tool is a free alternative with no sign-up. We do not claim that it matches remove.bg's quality, and results on fine detail like loose hair may be softer. Your photo is sent over an encrypted connection, and the result is deleted from our servers within one hour. Nothing about this page is affiliated with remove.bg.
How the cut-out is made
The model does not draw an outline. It looks at a reduced copy of your photo and gives every pixel a value between zero and one: how much of that pixel belongs to the subject. Solid areas come out as all or nothing, and the edge comes out as a soft gradient. A second step then compares that gradient with the photo at higher resolution and pulls it onto the edges that are really there, which is what rescues strands of hair and fur. The finished mask is scaled to the full picture, so the result has the same width and height as your original.
The mask is kept while you work. Changing the colour, the gradient or the feather only repaints the background, so each new version appears at once without the model running again.
Photos that cut out cleanly
Three things decide the quality of the edge before the model has seen anything. Contrast: a dark jacket against a dark doorway gives it nothing to separate. Focus: a sharp subject has a definite edge, a motion-blurred one does not. Framing: a subject that is whole and well inside the picture is recognised more reliably than one cut off on three sides.
If you can retake the photo, stand the subject a step or two in front of a plain wall in even light. If you cannot, expect to look hardest at hair, at fingers, and at the gaps between an arm and the body.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to my photos?
They are uploaded over an encrypted connection and processed on our own servers in the EU. We do not keep the original, and the result is deleted automatically within one hour.
What file formats does it support?
You can drop in a JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF or TIFF image, and also HEIC, PSD and the other formats on our formats page. The result downloads as a PNG or WebP when the background is transparent, or as PNG, WebP or JPEG when it's a solid colour.
Is this really free?
Yes. Free accounts can remove backgrounds from up to 20 images per batch at full resolution, with no watermark. A Pro plan raises the batch limit and adds extra background options.
How does the result compare to remove.bg?
It handles clean subjects like products, portraits and logos well. Fine detail such as loose or wispy hair is often less precise, so check the edges before you use the result.
How long does one image take?
Usually a few seconds, most of it the upload. Images are processed one after another on our servers, so a batch of twenty takes proportionally longer.
Can I use the result commercially?
The cut-out is your picture with part of it removed. We add no watermark and claim no rights in it. Whether you may use the original photo commercially is a separate matter between you and whoever took it.
