How it works
Add your images
Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.
Pick a quality or a target size
Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.
Download
Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.
Whatever kind of image you have, the steps are the same. Add the file, and the tool separates the subject from what is behind it. It reads JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF and TIFF, and also HEIC photos and Photoshop documents, so a phone photo, a screenshot and a scan are all fine as they are; there is nothing to convert first.
What you download depends on what you want behind the subject. Keep the background transparent and you get a PNG or a WebP, the two common formats that can hold transparency; WebP is usually the smaller file. Fill the background with a colour and JPG becomes available too, which suits photos that are going into a document or an online form. The size in pixels stays the same as the original unless you pick one of the product canvases.
Free use covers images of up to 20 MB each, 20 at a time. Everything is processed on our own servers: the upload is encrypted, the original is not kept, and the result is deleted within an hour. The model is good at subjects with a clear outline. Where the subject and the background are nearly the same colour, or the edge is very fine, expect to see some softness, and compare the result with the original using the divider before you rely on it.
Phone photo, screenshot or scan: what to expect
A phone photo is the easy case. It is sharp and large, and the subject usually fills a good part of the frame. HEIC files from an iPhone are read directly, so you can send them as they are. A screenshot behaves differently. It often contains several things of equal weight, a window, some text, a logo, and the tool has to decide which of them is the subject; crop to the part you want before you start and the answer becomes obvious.
A scan of a printed photo carries paper texture and sometimes a border. The border is removed with the background, which is normally welcome. A Photoshop file is read as the flattened picture stored inside it, the one you see on opening the file, so hidden layers play no part.
How heavy the download will be
A transparent PNG stores every remaining pixel exactly, and for a photograph that is expensive. The cut-out of a twelve-megapixel portrait can weigh 8 MB or more as a PNG. The same cut-out as a WebP is typically under 1 MB with the transparency intact, and on a white background as a JPG it is smaller still.
So choose by destination. PNG for design software and print services that ask for it. WebP for anything on the web. JPG with a solid colour for forms, documents and marketplaces. If the file is still too large, put the result through the compressor on this site, which reduces a PNG's colours without touching its transparency.
Pixel size, and the canvases for product photos
By default nothing is resized: a picture of 4000 by 3000 comes back at 4000 by 3000 with the background cleared. The product canvases are the exception. Choose 1000 by 1000, 2000 by 2000, 1600 by 2000 or 1200 by 628, and the subject is centred on a canvas of exactly that size, with the same margin all round. Shop platforms and ad systems tend to ask for precisely such fixed sizes, and this spares you a second tool.
Frequently asked questions
Which image formats can I upload?
JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, TIFF, HEIC, PSD and over 100 more formats, up to 20 MB each on the free plan.
Which format should I download?
PNG or WebP for a transparent background. JPG is offered once the background is a solid colour.
Does the image get smaller?
No. The result has the same pixel dimensions as the original unless you choose a product canvas.
Can I do several images at once?
Yes, up to 20 at a time for free, and download them together as a ZIP file.
Can I remove the background from a GIF or an animated image?
You can upload one, but only the first frame is processed. The result is a single still picture.
What is the largest image it accepts?
20 MB per file without an account and 200 MB with Pro. For background removal a picture may have up to 25 megapixels; reduce anything larger first. Camera RAW files are accepted on the Pro plan only.
