How it works
Add your images
Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.
Pick a quality or a target size
Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.
Download
Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.
Nearly every photo starts as a JPG, and a JPG always has a background, because the format has no way to say that a pixel is empty. Removing the background therefore means changing format as well. Add the photo, the subject is found and cut out on our servers, and you choose the form of the result: a transparent PNG or WebP, or a JPG again with the old background replaced by white or a colour.
The cut-out has the same width and height as your photo unless you pick a product canvas. Hair and fur are refined by default, a feather slider softens the outline if it looks too hard, and the divider in the editor lets you compare the result with the original before you download.
Up to twenty photos at a time are free, with no watermark and no account. Each photo may be up to 20 MB and 25 megapixels, which covers ordinary phone and camera pictures. Uploads are encrypted, handled only on our own servers and deleted within one hour.
JPG in, three kinds of file out
Which download to take depends on where the picture is going. A transparent PNG is for design work: slides, documents, layouts, print-on-demand. It opens everywhere and is heavy, often several megabytes for a phone photo. A transparent WebP is the same cut-out for the web, at a small fraction of the weight.
The third option is a JPG with a new solid background. It is what shop listings, application forms and profile pages mostly want: a small, universally accepted file with the subject on clean white or on a colour that matches the page. Choose the colour first and JPG appears in the format list.
What JPEG compression does to the edge
The quality of a cut-out depends on how clearly the subject's outline is recorded, and JPEG compression attacks exactly that. At low quality the format leaves a halo of faint noise along every strong edge, and blurs fine strands of hair into the wall behind them. The model then has less to go on, and bits of the old background can cling to the outline.
The practical lesson is to use the original. A photo straight from the camera roll cuts out more cleanly than the same photo after a messaging app has reduced and recompressed it. If you can choose how the picture reaches you, ask for it as a file or a document and not as a chat image.
From a snapshot to a listing photo in one pass
For selling online, three steps usually follow each other: remove the background, centre the product on a square, and bring the file under the shop's limit. The editor does the first two together. Set the background to white, choose a product canvas such as 2000 by 2000, and every photo in the batch comes out as a JPG with the product centred and an even margin. If the shop also limits the file size, take the downloads to the compressor on this site and enter the limit as a target size. Flat white costs almost nothing in a JPEG, so these files compress very well.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a transparent JPG?
No. The JPG format cannot store transparency at all. Download PNG or WebP for a transparent background, or pick a solid colour for a JPG.
Which is better for a transparent result, PNG or WebP?
PNG opens in every program and is the safe choice for documents and design tools. WebP is far smaller and is the better choice for websites.
Does the result have the same resolution as my JPG?
Yes. The picture is not reduced. Only the product canvases change the dimensions, to the size you select.
Why is there a faint outline of the old background?
Edge pixels in the photo were a blend of subject and background. Raise the feather slightly, or choose a new background close in tone to the old one, where it will not show.
My photo is larger than 25 megapixels. What can I do?
Reduce it first with the resize tool. 4000 pixels on the long side is more than enough for a clean cut-out.
Is the photo used for anything else?
No. It is processed once, on our own servers, not used for training and not passed to anyone. The result is deleted within the hour.
