From 1 December 2026, by remove.bg's own announcement, its background removal becomes part of Leonardo.Ai, which belongs to Canva. If that change has you looking for somewhere else to remove backgrounds, this is an independent tool that does the same basic job: you add a picture and get the subject without its background.
Some things work differently here. There are no credits: free use is up to 20 images at a time at full resolution, without a watermark, and without an account. Besides a transparent result you can choose a white, black or custom colour, a gradient or a blurred version of the original scene, and centre a product on a square canvas. Developers get a REST API and an MCP server with a free monthly allowance, documented on the developers page.
We want to be plain about quality. This is not a claim that results match remove.bg. The model here runs on ordinary servers and does well with clear subjects such as products, portraits and logos; very fine detail, loose hair above all, is often softer. Try it on your own pictures and judge the edges with the before and after divider. Uploads are encrypted, handled only on our own servers and deleted within an hour. Nothing on this page is affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to remove.bg, Leonardo.Ai or Canva.
What to compare before you switch
Background removers differ in four ways that matter in daily use, and it is worth ten minutes to test each on your own pictures. The edge: run three of your typical images, one of them difficult, and look at hair and at gaps between limbs. The download: check whether the free result is the full size of your original or a reduced preview. Here it is full size, up to 25 megapixels. The cost: credits per image suit occasional use, a flat price suits volume. And the handling of your files: where they are processed, who else receives them and when they are deleted.
Moving an existing integration
If your shop, app or script calls a background-removal API today, the change on our side is small. One endpoint accepts the image as the request body, as a multipart upload or as a link, and returns the cut-out. Query parameters set the background, the edge feather and the output format. Keys are created on the account page, can be limited to particular features and can be rotated with one click.
Test keys exist for building the integration without using your monthly allowance; they accept small files only. For automation tools that speak MCP there is a hosted server with the same functions. The developers page has the request format, code samples and an explorer you can try in the browser.
Where this tool is weaker, and where it is not
Be clear about the gaps before you rely on it. There is no brush for correcting a mask by hand. There are no AI-generated scenes, only colours, gradients, blur and your own picture. And fine hair is rendered more softly than the best paid services manage.
On the other side of the ledger: no credits, no watermark and no sign-up for ordinary use; more than a hundred input formats including HEIC and PSD; batches of twenty for free; and compression, resizing and conversion in the same place for the files you have just cut out.
