How it works

  1. Add your images

Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

A sideways JPG is one of the commonest small annoyances with photos, and it comes in two kinds that look alike. In the first, the picture really is stored on its side. In the second, it is stored correctly with a note attached, and the program showing it ignores the note. This page deals with both, and the file you download is upright in every program, because the pixels themselves have been turned.

Add your JPGs and use the two rotate buttons for quarter turns to the left or the right; press twice for a half turn. The Fine angle slider next to them turns the picture by single degrees, for horizons that slope. The rotation applies to every photo in the batch, and the output is a JPG at quality 90.

Twenty photos at a time need no account. They travel over an encrypted connection to our own servers, and the uploads and the rotated copies are deleted an hour later at the latest.

Three symptoms, three fixes

The photo looks right in your phone's gallery and lies on its side on a website or in a form. That is the note being ignored. Add the photo here and download it without touching any button; passing through is enough, since the note is applied and then removed.

The photo is sideways everywhere, including here. Then it was taken or scanned that way, and a quarter turn with the buttons puts it right. And if a whole stack of scans came out upside down because the paper went into the feeder the wrong way, add all of them and press the same button twice. In a mixed batch, select the odd ones and switch on Only this image before turning them.

Is the rotation lossless?

Not here, and it is better to say so plainly. The photo is decoded, turned and encoded again as a JPG at quality 90. That one extra generation costs a trace of detail that you will not find by looking, but it is not zero.

True lossless JPEG rotation exists. It rearranges the compressed blocks without decoding them, and dedicated desktop tools offer it. It only works for quarter turns and only cleanly when the picture's dimensions are multiples of the block size. For an archive of originals you intend to keep untouched, use such a tool. For photos you are about to send, upload or post, the difference has no practical meaning, and you gain a file with its metadata removed and its orientation settled.

Levelling a JPG by a few degrees

When you turn a rectangle by three degrees, its corners stick out past the old frame. The canvas is enlarged to hold them, and the four small triangles that appear have to be filled with something. A JPG has no transparency, so they take the background colour: white unless you set another in the editor. Black suits night scenes, and a colour close to the edges of the photo hides the triangles best.

For a clean rectangular result, download the levelled photo and crop it in the crop tool just inside the triangles. Alternatively save as PNG, where the corners are transparent.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my photo upright on my phone and sideways elsewhere?

The file carries an orientation note that your phone obeys and the other program does not. Running the photo through this page turns the pixels and removes the note.

Does rotating reduce the quality of a JPG?

Very slightly. The turned photo is saved again at quality 90. You will not see the difference at any normal size.

Can I rotate by any angle?

Yes. The buttons turn by 90 degrees and the Fine angle slider by single degrees, clockwise for positive numbers.

Can I rotate many JPGs at once?

Yes. A rotation applies to the whole batch, up to twenty photos on the free plan.

Do width and height swap after a quarter turn?

Yes. A 4000 by 3000 photo becomes 3000 by 4000, with nothing cut off.

Is the capture date kept?

By default all metadata is removed. Choose to keep metadata in the editor if the date and camera data should stay; the orientation note is corrected either way.
