# Sharpen an image

Bring out edges and fine detail in a photo that looks a little soft, with one slider.

## How it works

1. **Add your images** Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.
2. **Pick a quality or a target size** Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.
3. **Download** Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

Photos often come out softer than they looked on the camera's screen: a phone that focused on the background, a picture taken through a window, a scan of an old print, or an image that was resized smaller and lost its bite. Sharpening increases the contrast right at the edges, so outlines, text and textures stand out more clearly. This page opens with a moderate amount already applied.

Move the slider to taste. Small amounts make a picture look clean and finished; large amounts look harsh, with bright halos along edges and grain that suddenly shows. The noise reduction slider in the same panel can calm that grain before sharpening, which is useful for photos taken in dim light.

Several pictures can be sharpened together and downloaded as a ZIP. They are processed on our server and deleted straight after.

## What sharpening can and cannot do

Sharpening makes existing detail more visible; it does not create detail that the camera never captured. A slightly soft photo improves a lot. A photo blurred by camera shake or badly out of focus improves only a little, because the information is not there. For small pictures that need more pixels, the AI upscaler rebuilds fine detail as it enlarges.

## How much to use

View the result at full size, not as a small preview, and look at edges with strong contrast such as hair against the sky or text on a sign. Stop just before halos appear. Pictures meant for print usually take a little more sharpening than pictures for a screen, because ink softens them.

If you are unsure, compare the result with the original at the same zoom: the sharpened version should look cleaner, not different.

## Sharpen after resizing

Making a picture smaller blurs it slightly. If you resize and sharpen, do the resizing first: open the advanced settings, set the size there, and the sharpening is applied to the smaller picture.

Once you find the right amount, use it for the whole set.

## Sharpening scans and screenshots

Scans of prints and old documents are often slightly soft, because the scanner reads through glass and paper. A moderate amount of sharpening makes text and lines read more clearly. Screenshots, on the other hand, are usually already sharp; sharpening them only adds fringes around letters, so leave the slider low for them.

For product photos on a shop, a light touch of sharpening after resizing gives the crisp look buyers expect without visible halos.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can this fix a blurry photo?

It helps with slight softness. Strong blur from movement or missed focus cannot be undone.

### Why does my photo look grainy after sharpening?

Sharpening also strengthens noise. Lower the amount or raise noise reduction a little.

### Does sharpening change the file size?

Usually it grows a little, since crisper detail takes more data to store.

### Can I sharpen many photos at once?

Yes. Add them together and they download as a ZIP.

### Is my picture stored?

No. The sharpened copy is made on our server and the photo you sent is erased from it right after.

### What does noise reduction do?

It smooths the speckle that appears in photos taken in dim light, so sharpening does not make it worse.

### Does sharpening work on faces?

Yes, but gently: skin shows texture quickly, so a low amount usually looks best for portraits.
