# Crop an image to a square

Turn a tall or wide photo into a 1:1 square, with the frame placed exactly where you want it.

## How it works

1. **Add your images** Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.
2. **Pick a quality or a target size** Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.
3. **Download** Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

Square pictures are everywhere: profile photos on every social and messaging app, product thumbnails on shops, album covers, app icons and the cells of a photo grid. Most cameras take rectangles, so something has to be cut away, and the result depends entirely on which part you keep.

Add your photo and a square frame appears over it, already set to 1:1. Drag it to the part you want and resize it from the corners; the shape stays square however you pull it. Prefer it done for you? Switch on placement by face or by subject and the server centres the square on what matters.

The square is cut at the photo's full resolution, so nothing is lost but the edges you chose to drop. Download it in the same format, or pick another in Advanced.

## Placing the square

For a portrait, leave a little space above the head and keep the eyes about a third of the way down; a square that cuts the chin or the top of the hair looks cramped. For a product, centre the object and leave an even margin on every side, which also helps when a shop adds its own border.

With face placement on, a group photo's square is placed around all the faces when they fit, or the largest one when they do not.

## Many photos, one shape

Add several pictures and each gets its own square frame, so a whole set of product photos or a gallery can be made uniform in one go. Move each frame separately, or leave automatic placement on for all of them.

## Square without cutting

If nothing may be cut away, the photo can instead be fitted into a square with plain bands added at the sides. The WhatsApp profile picture page does exactly that, with a white background you can change.

## Privacy

Your pictures are cropped on our server and deleted from it once the squares are ready.

## Size after cropping

The square keeps the photo's own pixels: crop a 4,000 by 3,000 picture and you get about 3,000 by 3,000. If a site wants a particular size, such as 600 by 600, use the resize settings in the same panel, or the 600 × 600 page, which does both at once.

## Round profile pictures

Many apps show a square photo inside a circle. If you want the circle itself, with clear corners, the circle crop page cuts it out and saves a transparent PNG.

## Formats for a square

Keep JPEG for photos, which is what profile and shop uploads expect. For a logo or a picture with transparent areas, choose PNG in Advanced so the see-through parts stay that way.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I choose which part stays?

Yes. Drag the square frame and resize it from its corners.

### Can it find the face for me?

Yes. Turn on face placement and the square is centred on the faces.

### Does cropping reduce quality?

No. The square is cut at full resolution.

### Can I crop many photos at once?

Yes. Each gets its own frame.

### Is my photo kept?

No. It is deleted from our server once the square is made.

### How do I make a square without cutting anything?

Use the WhatsApp profile picture page, which pads instead of cropping.

### Can I crop to another shape?

Yes. Pick 4:5, 16:9 or another ratio, or crop freely.
