SVG is the best format for logos and icons on the web: it is a description of shapes, so it stays sharp at any size. Many places still will not take it. Social networks, email signatures, office documents, app stores and most upload forms want a picture made of pixels, and PNG is the one that keeps a logo's transparent background and clean edges.
The drawing is rendered at the size written in the SVG file itself, its width and height, and saved as a PNG with transparency intact. Compressed SVGZ files are read as well. Text is the one weak point: a file that names a font instead of containing its shapes may be drawn in a different font, or lose the text. Converting text to outlines in your drawing program before exporting avoids that.
A practical tip: decide on the pixel size before you convert. Because a PNG is made of pixels, enlarging it afterwards makes it soft. If you need the logo larger, set the width and height in the SVG, or export it larger from your drawing program, and then convert. Scripts and outside resources inside an SVG are never run or fetched. Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection and deleted within one hour.
Setting the size inside the SVG
An SVG is a text file, and its first lines state how large the drawing claims to be. Open it in any text editor and look at the opening svg tag. It usually has a width, a height and a viewBox. The viewBox describes the drawing's own coordinate system and should be left alone. Width and height say how big to draw it. Change them from 24 to 512, keeping their proportion, save the file, and the same icon is rendered at 512 pixels with perfectly sharp edges.
If the tag has a viewBox and no width or height, add the two attributes yourself. This small edit is the entire difference between a blurry enlarged PNG and a clean one.
Sizes people usually need
A profile picture for social networks looks good at 800 pixels square. App stores ask for 1024. The preview image that appears when a link is shared is 1200 by 630. A logo in an email signature is shown about 200 pixels wide, so make it 400 for high-density screens. A slide wants roughly 1000 pixels of logo width. For a website icon, convert a square version of at least 256 pixels and pass the PNG to the ICO converter on this site.
Make each size from the SVG, not by resizing an earlier PNG, and each will be as sharp as the format allows.
What does not survive the conversion
A PNG is one still picture, so anything in the SVG that moves or reacts is frozen in its starting state: animations, hover effects, anything a script would draw. Images and fonts that the file links to on another server are not fetched, for safety, and those parts are left empty or drawn in a fallback font. Everything that is described inside the file itself is drawn: shapes, gradients, strokes, clipping, and pictures embedded in it.
On your own website, keep using the SVG. It is smaller than any PNG and sharp on every screen. The PNG is for the places that will not take a vector.
Frequently asked questions
Is the background transparent?
Yes, wherever the SVG itself has no background.
How large is the PNG?
The size the SVG declares in its width and height. You can reduce it in the editor.
Why does the text look different or go missing?
The font named in the SVG is not on our servers, so another is used or the text is left out. Convert text to outlines before exporting.
Can I get a JPG instead?
Yes. Switch the format in the editor; the transparent areas are then filled with a colour you choose.
Why is my PNG tiny or blurry?
The SVG declares a small size, as icon files often do with 24 by 24. The PNG is drawn at that size. Raise the width and height in the SVG file and convert again.
Can I turn a PNG back into an SVG?
Not here. Tracing pixels into shapes is a different process and this site does not offer it. Keep the SVG as your original.
