# Resize a thumb impression for a form

Photograph the thumb print on white paper, and get a clean image at the size and weight the form asks for.

## How it works

1. **Add your images** Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.
2. **Pick a quality or a target size** Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.
3. **Download** Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

Bank, railway and public service recruitment forms in several countries ask for a left thumb impression next to the photo and signature. The print is made with an ink pad on white paper and then photographed, which tends to give a grey sheet, a shadow and a blurry patch of blue. This page cleans that photo the same way our signature cleaner does: the paper turns white, the ridges stay dark, and the crop closes in on the print.

Type the width and height from your form's instructions, and its KB limits if it gives them. The impression is fitted inside that box without being cut or stretched, and the file is brought within the range by quality alone. Choose the pen's colour to keep the blue of the ink pad, or black if the form wants a monochrome image.

Every number here comes from you: we do not guess what any particular form requires, so copy them from the instructions in front of you.

## Making a clear impression

Press the thumb on the ink pad lightly, then roll it once on plain white paper from one side of the nail to the other, without sliding. Too much ink fills the ridges and leaves a blot; too little leaves gaps. Make two or three prints and photograph the clearest, in daylight, from straight above, with the print filling much of the picture.

## Which thumb, and which colour

Most forms ask for the left thumb; some name the right one for left-handed applicants. Blue or black ink is usual. If the instructions do not mention colour, keeping the pen's colour shows the print as made, which is closest to what an officer would see on paper.

## When the result looks patchy

The cleaner keeps what is clearly darker than the paper around it, so pale ridges from a dry print can disappear. Make a new impression with a little more ink rather than editing this one: an altered print can be refused.

## Putting the forms together

Applications that ask for a thumb impression usually also want a photo, a signature and sometimes a handwritten declaration, each in its own slot with its own size. Prepare them one after another in the same sitting, with the same light and paper, so they look consistent, and keep the downloads in one folder named after the application.

Before you submit, look at all the files together. If one is clearly darker or greyer than the others, make it again in better light, since officers often compare the attached pictures with one another.

## Frequently asked questions

### What size should a thumb impression be?

It depends on the form; the instructions state a width, a height and often a KB range. Type them in exactly.

### Can I use a scanner instead of a phone?

Yes. A scan is already flat and even, and the cleaner then mainly crops and sizes it.

### Why is there white space around the print?

The print is fitted inside the box without cropping, so if its shape differs from the box, white fills the rest.

### Is my thumb print stored?

No. It is processed on our server and deleted immediately; we keep no copy.

### Can I do the declaration the same way?

Yes, the handwritten declaration page works the same way, with its own size.

### Can the impression be on coloured paper?

Plain white is best. On coloured paper the cleaner still whitens the background, but faint ridges may be lost.

### Can I use an ordinary stamp pad?

Yes, any ink stamp pad will do. What matters is even ink and a print that is not smudged, because smudged ridges cannot be cleaned up.
