How it works
Add your images
Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.
Pick a quality or a target size
Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.
Download
Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.
A transparent background means the picture has no background at all: wherever you put it, whatever is underneath shows through around the subject. That is what you need for a product on a coloured web page, a portrait on a slide, or a sticker in a chat. This page opens the editor with transparency already chosen, so the first result you see is the one you came for.
Transparency is stored in an extra channel that only some formats have. PNG is the safe choice and opens everywhere. WebP holds the same transparency in a noticeably smaller file and works in every current browser, which makes it the better pick for a website. JPG cannot be transparent at all, which is why it is not offered until you choose a solid background.
The grey and white chequered pattern in the preview is not part of the picture; it is how the editor shows the areas that are see-through. Edges are refined for hair and fur by default, and the feather slider adds a pixel or two of softness if the outline looks cut with scissors. Uploads are encrypted and handled on our own servers, originals are not kept, and results are deleted within an hour. Very fine or semi-transparent detail, such as glass or smoke, is hard for any automatic tool and may not come out cleanly.
Where a transparent picture is actually needed
Presentation programs come first. A portrait or a product with no box around it sits on a coloured slide as if it had been designed there. Online design tools treat a transparent PNG as an element you can layer over anything. On a website it lets one image work on a light theme and a dark one alike. Print-on-demand services for shirts, mugs and stickers insist on it, because whatever is not transparent gets printed, white rectangle included.
Word processors accept transparent PNGs as well, which is the tidy way to place a signature or a stamp over text.
The pale fringe, and how to avoid it
The commonest complaint about cut-outs is a thin light line around the subject once it is placed on a dark background. It comes from edge pixels that were a blend of subject and old background when the photo was taken. A hair against a white wall is recorded as light grey, and that grey stays in the hair after the wall is gone.
Two settings reduce it. Edge refinement, on by default, tightens the mask so fewer blended pixels are kept. The feather slider then softens what remains by one to three pixels. Before you download, set the background to black for a moment. Any fringe shows up immediately, and switching back to transparent costs nothing because the model does not run again.
Partly transparent is allowed
Transparency is not an on-off switch. Each pixel carries a value from 0 to 255 for how opaque it is, and the cut-out uses that range along its edge. It is why a well-made transparent picture has no jagged staircase around curves, and why it blends into any background colour without a visible seam. The same range is the reason GIF is not offered here: GIF knows only fully visible and fully invisible, which makes every curved edge look chewed.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my result show a chequered pattern?
That pattern marks the transparent areas in the preview. It is not in the file you download.
PNG or WebP?
PNG opens everywhere. WebP is smaller and suits websites. Both keep the transparency.
Why can't I download a transparent JPG?
The JPG format has no transparency. Choose PNG or WebP, or pick a solid background for JPG.
Will it work with glass or smoke?
Usually not well. Semi-transparent subjects are hard to separate automatically.
Will the transparent PNG work for T-shirt printing?
The transparency will. Check the pixel size as well: print services usually want about 300 pixels for every inch of the printed design, so a design 25 centimetres wide needs roughly 3000 pixels.
How can I see the result on a coloured background before downloading?
Pick a colour in the background options to preview it, then return to Transparent for the download. The switch is instant.
