How it works

  1. Add your images

Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

Ordinary enlarging stretches the pixels that are there and smooths between them, which is why a small photo looks soft when it is blown up. This tool runs a super-resolution model instead: a neural network trained on pairs of small and large images, which predicts what the missing detail most plausibly looked like. Edges, hair, lettering and fine texture come out visibly crisper than with plain resizing.

The result has twice the width and twice the height, four times the pixels. It works best on photos and artwork that are small but clean. It is not magic: detail the model adds is a well-informed guess, heavy JPEG blocking in the source can be sharpened along with everything else, and faces or text that are only a few pixels across cannot be recovered.

The model runs on our own servers, not on a third-party service, and it works through the picture piece by piece, so allow a few seconds for a small image and longer for a large one. Free use covers images of up to one megapixel, roughly 1000 by 1000 pixels before upscaling; Pro raises that to 2.25 megapixels. Transparent PNG and WebP files keep their transparency. Uploads are encrypted and files are deleted within one hour.

Pictures that benefit most

The upscaler earns its keep on images that are small but otherwise sound. Photos from an early digital camera or an old phone, at 640 by 480 or thereabouts. A product picture from a supplier that is too small for your shop's zoom. A thumbnail that is all that remains of a lost original. A scan of a small print. An illustration or a generated image that came out at 1024 pixels and is needed at twice that.

It is the wrong tool for pictures whose trouble is something other than size. A photo that is out of focus stays out of focus, only larger. A heavily compressed JPEG has its blocks sharpened along with its subject. Pixel art loses its hard squares, because the model was trained on photographs and smooths what it takes for jagged edges.

From screen size to print size

The usual reason to upscale is print. At 300 dots per inch a 1000 pixel image covers 8.5 centimetres, hardly a postcard. Doubled to 2000 pixels it covers 17 centimetres, enough for a photo-book page or a small frame. Posters are viewed from further away and need only about 150 dots per inch, so the same 2000 pixels stretch to 34 centimetres on a wall.

A second pass doubles the size again, with a condition: the picture going in must still be within the size limit. In practice a 500 by 500 image can be taken to 2000 by 2000 in two passes on the free plan, and a 750 by 750 image to 3000 by 3000 on Pro.

Look closely at faces and lettering

Everything the model adds is invented to be plausible. For foliage, fabric, fur and brick, plausible is all anyone needs. For a face that is only forty pixels wide in the source, plausible can mean eyes or teeth that look right and are not quite that person's. Small text is similar: the model may sharpen a blur into letters that were never there. Check both at full size before using the result. Do not use an upscaled picture where the detail itself is the point, as with identity documents, evidence or number plates.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from resizing?

Resizing interpolates between existing pixels. The upscaler uses a trained model to reconstruct edges and texture, so the result is sharper.

How large can the image be?

Up to one megapixel on the free plan and 2.25 megapixels on Pro, measured before upscaling.

Can I upscale more than 2x?

One pass doubles the size. You can run the result through again while it is still under the size limit.

Is my photo sent to an AI company?

No. The model is an open one that runs on our own servers. Nothing is sent to a third party.

Which file types can I upscale?

JPEG, PNG and WebP. For any other format, convert it first with one of the converter pages on this site, then bring the result here.

How big is the upscaled file?

It has four times the pixels, and as a rule two to four times the bytes. Choose JPEG or WebP as the output format for a lighter file, or put the result through the compressor afterwards.
