How it works

  1. Add your images

Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

Small JPGs are everywhere: photos from old phones, pictures saved from messages, product shots from a supplier, a scan someone made at low resolution. Enlarged the ordinary way they turn soft, because stretching can only spread existing pixels over a larger area. This page uses a super-resolution model instead, which has learned from many pairs of small and large photographs what fine detail usually looks like and draws it in.

The result has twice the width and twice the height, four times the pixels, and comes back as a JPG. Add a photo, wait while it is processed in pieces, and compare it with the original in the editor before you download.

Free use covers photos of up to one megapixel before upscaling, about 1150 by 860 pixels, and the Pro plan raises that to 2.25 megapixels. The model runs on our own servers and nothing is sent to a third party. Photos are uploaded encrypted and deleted within one hour.

JPEG compression is the thing to watch

A JPG has two kinds of content: the picture, and the marks its compression left behind. On a heavily compressed photo those marks are faint 8 by 8 pixel blocks in smooth areas and a shimmer of noise around sharp edges. The model cannot always tell them from real detail. It enlarges them with everything else, and a block pattern that was barely visible at the original size becomes a visible 16 by 16 grid.

So start from the best copy you can find. The photo as it came off the camera or the phone is better than the version that travelled through a messaging app, and the largest version on a website is better than its thumbnail. If the only copy is rough, try it anyway, and judge skies and skin, where blocks show first.

What a doubled photo is good for

Screens are the easy case. An 800 by 600 photo fills a corner of a modern monitor. At 1600 by 1200 it fills most of it and holds up on a slide or a web page. Print is where the gain matters most. At the 300 dots per inch a photo lab works with, 800 pixels cover under 7 centimetres, and 1600 cover 13.5, enough for a 10 by 15 print with a small margin.

For a single old family photo that someone wants in a frame, that step from too small to large enough is often the whole job.

Where to be careful

The detail the model adds is a plausible invention. For hair, grass, fabric and stone, that is all the eye asks for. A small face is different. Eyes and mouths that were a handful of pixels wide are redrawn from what faces generally look like, and the result may be a sharp face that is subtly not the person's own. Check portraits at full size, and prefer the original for anything where likeness matters.

Text behaves the same way: large lettering comes out crisp, and lettering too small to read stays unreadable or turns into letter-like shapes. Do not rely on an upscaled photo to recover a number plate or a document.

Frequently asked questions

Why not enlarge the JPG in an image editor?

An editor spreads the pixels you have over a larger area and smooths the gaps, which gives a bigger and softer photo. The model here draws new edges and texture, so the enlarged photo keeps its bite.

What is the largest JPG it accepts?

Without a Pro plan, a photo of one megapixel before upscaling, for instance 1150 by 860. With Pro, 2.25 megapixels, about 1730 by 1300. Larger photos already have more pixels than this tool is meant for.

Can I upscale four times?

Run the result through again, as long as it is still inside the size limit. A 500 by 500 photo can go to 2000 by 2000 in two passes on the free plan.

Will it remove JPEG artefacts?

No. It is trained to add resolution, not to clean compression damage, and strong artefacts are enlarged along with the picture.

How big is the file afterwards?

Roughly two to four times the original. Four times the pixels do not need four times the bytes, because the added detail is smooth.

How long does it take?

A few seconds for a small photo and longer near the size limit. The model works through the picture tile by tile on our server's processor.
