The photo for a Chinese visa application is narrower and taller than a typical passport photo. The Consulate General of China in Los Angeles states the size as 48 millimetres by 33 millimetres. This page opens the photo maker on that format: your picture is cropped to the eleven-to-sixteen shape and saved at 390 by 567 pixels, which prints at 33 by 48 millimetres at 300 DPI.
The consulate's page adds three measurable requirements. The width of the head must be 15 to 22 millimetres, and the height of the head 28 to 33 millimetres. The photo must be in colour with a white background, without an edge frame, and it must have been taken within the last six months.
Those numbers are shown in the table below with the date we read them. The consulate page we read describes the printed photo and gives no pixel or file-size limits for a digital upload. For that reason this preset sets no KB range. If your application uses an online form that displays its own limits, type them into the panel.

Head width and height in pixels
On the 390 by 567 pixel file, a head 15 to 22 millimetres wide spans 177 to 260 pixels, and a head 28 to 33 millimetres high spans 331 to 390 pixels. The head therefore fills well over half the height, with space above the hair and the shoulders showing below. Move and resize the frame until the result is in that range.
Having both a width and a height rule means the head can be neither too far nor too close. A picture taken from a couple of metres away with a little zoom gives natural proportions that satisfy both.
White means white
Unlike several European countries, the requirement here is a white background. An off-white wall under warm indoor light photographs as cream or grey. Use daylight, or switch on "Replace the background", which fills with pure white for this preset. The "no edge frame" wording means the photo must not have a border, and the files made here have none.
Printing six to a sheet
Six copies of a 33 by 48 millimetre photo fit on a 4 by 6 inch print, two across and three down. The grey outlines on the sheet lie outside the photo area and are there to guide the scissors; cut on the inside of the line so that no outline is left on the photo, since a visible border is exactly what the consulate's wording excludes.
If your form wants a digital file
The single photo can be downloaded without the sheet. It has 390 by 567 pixels, which is the printed size at 300 DPI. If an online form asks for a different pixel count or a ceiling in kilobytes, choose the custom size, type its numbers, and let them set the shape of the frame.
