How it works

  1. Add your images

Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

The Indian visa application is completed online, and the photo is uploaded as a file with tight limits. The Consulate General of India in Milan lists them on its online visa form page: JPEG format, a minimum size of 10 KB and a maximum of 300 KB, minimum dimensions of 350 by 350 pixels and maximum dimensions of 1,000 by 1,000 pixels.

This page opens the photo maker with those limits filled in. The frame is square, the output is a 1,000 by 1,000 pixel JPG, the largest the form takes, and the quality is tuned so the file lands under 300 KB. The format buttons are locked to JPG, because that is the only type the source names.

The consulate also asks that the background be plain, light coloured or white. The table below shows each figure and the date it was read. Missions in different countries publish their own instructions, so compare these numbers with the ones on the form you are filling in before you upload.

Why 1,000 pixels and under 300 KB

A larger picture keeps more detail in the face, so this preset makes the biggest square the form allows. A 1,000 pixel JPG at high quality often weighs 300 to 500 KB, which is over the limit, so the quality is lowered step by step until the file fits. The pixel size does not change during that search. On a normal portrait the reduction is invisible.

If your form shows a different ceiling, change the maximum in the panel. If it requires a smaller square, choose the custom size, select pixels and enter it; anything from 350 upwards is inside the range the consulate gives.

Height and width must be equal

The source's dimensions are square at both ends of the range, and the square frame on this page guarantees equal sides. Put the face in the middle of the frame, with the full head from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin visible and some space on either side.

The paper photo is a different thing

Where a paper application is used, the same consulate page asks for a photograph of 5 by 5 centimetres with a white background. That is a print, not the upload. To make it here, pick the 2 by 2 inch size, which is 51 by 51 millimetres, or enter 50 by 50 millimetres under the custom size if your mission insists on the exact figure. Two copies fit on one 4 by 6 inch print.

The picture you start from

A 1,000 pixel square needs an original with at least that many pixels around the head. A picture from a current phone has plenty, while a small scan of an old document does not; a warning about enlargement then appears under the result. In that case choose a smaller square, such as 600 pixels, which is still inside the permitted range.

Frequently asked questions

What pixel size does the Indian visa photo need?

Between 350 × 350 and 1,000 × 1,000 pixels, with equal height and width, according to the Consulate General of India in Milan.

What is the file size limit?

A minimum of 10 KB and a maximum of 300 KB, in JPEG format.

Does the background have to be white?

The source asks for a plain light coloured or white background for the upload, and a white background for the 5 × 5 cm paper photo.

The upload still says my file is too large. Why?

Some checkers count 300 KB as 300,000 bytes. This preset already stays under that figure; if yours is stricter, lower the maximum in the panel.

Can I use the same file for an Indian passport application?

This preset covers the visa form only. Passport applications have their own photo instructions, which we have not sourced.

Can I choose 600 × 600 instead of 1,000?

Yes. Pick the custom size, set the unit to pixels and type 600 for both sides. Enter the KB limits again afterwards.
