How it works

  1. Add your images

Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

Immigration Service Delivery, part of Ireland's Department of Justice, sets the photo rules for visa applications. Each application needs two passport-sized photos, less than six months old and showing exactly the same image, between 45 and 50 millimetres high and 35 and 38 millimetres wide. If they do not meet the rules, the application is delayed until correct photos arrive.

This page prints the smallest size inside both ranges, 35 by 45 millimetres, from a file of 413 by 531 pixels at 300 DPI. Eight copies fit on one 4 by 6 inch sheet, so one print gives you the matching pair and spares.

The table shows the size and background with the date we read the page. Irish travel documents, as opposed to visas, follow a separate guide with different rules, which this page does not cover.

Check the official requirements before you submit. We resize to the numbers shown; we do not check face position, expression, glasses, lighting or background rules.

Face 70 to 80 percent

Both photos show a close-up of your face and the top of the shoulders, with the face taking up 70 to 80 percent of the photo. That is a tight frame. On the 531 pixel tall file, a face filling that share of the height runs from about 372 to 425 pixels, so place the frame closer than feels natural.

White or light grey, no glare

The background is plain white or light grey, with good contrast against your face and no shadows or glare in the image or behind you. The photo must be in colour, in sharp focus and correctly exposed, with good colour balance, natural skin tones and no red eye.

"Replace the background" fills with white for this preset when your wall falls short. Check the hairline before printing two identical copies.

Pose and expression

The head is centred, and you look directly at the camera with your full face showing, without tilting or turning. The expression is neutral: no squinting, frowning or smiling, eyes open, mouth closed, and no hair over the eyes. Sunglasses and tinted or coloured glasses are not allowed; with ordinary glasses, the eyes must be clearly visible. Fix your hair before the photo so it does not fall over the eyebrows.

Writing on the back

Print on photographic paper whose reverse is white and unglazed, because you have to write on it. On the back of each photo, in block capitals, write the applicant's name and the visa application or transaction number, which you can leave out for a re-entry visa. Put the photos in the same envelope as the form, and do not staple or attach them to it.

Head coverings

Do not wear a hat, cap, headband or any other head or hair covering, unless you wear it for religious reasons. In that case your face must be clearly visible.
