Italian consulates list the documents for a Schengen visa on their own pages. The Consulate General of Italy in Los Angeles asks for a recent passport-size photograph of 35 by 45 millimetres, on a white background, full face and front view, in colour, and states that scanned or photocopied photos will not be accepted. The embassy in Nairobi's 2026 checklist uses the same size and calls it the ICAO format.

This page opens the photo maker at 35 by 45 millimetres. The file is 413 by 531 pixels at 300 DPI and prints at that size; eight copies fit on a 4 by 6 inch sheet.

The table links the Los Angeles page and the date we read it. Each consulate writes its own list, so compare with the one where you apply.

A real print, not a scan

The consulate refuses scanned and photocopied photos. What it wants is a photographic print. Print this file at a photo lab or kiosk on photo paper, cut one copy out along the gaps, and attach it as the form asks. A photo printed on an office printer is effectively a copy and risks the same refusal.

White, full face, front view

The background must be white. The face is shown fully and from the front, not turned towards a shoulder. An off-white wall photographed indoors often turns cream or grey in the picture, so check the result on screen before printing.

"Replace the background" fills with pure white for this preset if your wall came out grey. Look at the edges of the hair at full size afterwards.

Not older than six months

The Nairobi checklist adds that the photo must not be older than six months. Use a recent picture rather than one you had made for an older document, even if it has the right size. Note the date the photo was taken so you can check it.

The Italian passport photo

Italian citizens use a 35 by 45 millimetre photo on white for the passport and identity card as well, and there is a separate page for it. The visa photo follows the same frame; the difference is whose rules apply, which here are those of the consulate handling your visa.

Applying in person

The Nairobi checklist also says the applicant must apply in person and that documents must not be stapled, so attach the photo the way the form shows rather than with a staple. It refuses screenshots or photos of documents in place of the documents themselves.

Checking the print

Before you go, measure one printed copy with a ruler: it should be 35 millimetres wide and 45 high. If a kiosk has added a white border or shrunk the sheet to fit the paper, the copy will come out smaller, and you should print again with resizing turned off.
