International students coming to Malaysia apply for their student pass through Education Malaysia Global Services, known as EMGS. Its photo guidelines ask for a colour photo 50 millimetres high and 35 millimetres wide, on a plain white background, which is taller than the 35 by 45 format used in much of Europe.
This page opens the photo maker at that shape. The file is 413 by 591 pixels at 300 DPI, which prints at exactly 35 by 50 millimetres, and four copies fit on a 4 by 6 inch sheet.
The guidelines also say the photo must not be trimmed or altered from a larger image to fit these dimensions, and that it should be taken by a professional photographer in a studio. Read the section below on what that means for a file made here.

A studio photo, not a selfie
EMGS asks for a photo taken by a professional photographer in a photo studio, for proper lighting and quality. It must not be self-taken, and it must not be digitally altered in any way, so no filters or enhancements. The most honest use of this page is to check the size of a studio file, or to prepare the studio's file for printing at the right size.
Because the photo must not be trimmed from a larger image, ask the studio to frame the shot for 35 by 50 millimetres from the start.
White background and contrast
The background must be plain white so that you stand out clearly. Wear clothes that are not similar in colour to the background; a white shirt against white makes the outline of the shoulders disappear. Lighting must be even and balanced, with no shadows on the face or the background.
Tell the studio when you book that you need a white background for a Malaysian student pass.
No glasses
The guidelines ask you to remove your glasses, to avoid glare and reflection and keep the eyes clearly visible. Hair must not cover any part of the face, including the eyes and eyebrows. Head coverings are not permitted except for religious reasons, and then the face must remain fully visible. If you cannot see well without them, ask the photographer to guide you.
Pose and quality
Face the camera directly, with face and shoulders square to it and lips closed for a neutral expression. Only you may appear in the photo. It must be clear, sharp and of high quality, not blurred, pixelated or distorted, and in colour rather than black and white.
Printing the photo
Once the studio file is the right size, print it on photo paper at a lab or kiosk with resizing switched off. The sheet option gives four copies on one 4 by 6 inch print; cut along the gaps and check one with a ruler, which should show 35 by 50 millimetres.
