Netherlands Worldwide, the Dutch government's service for people abroad, publishes a checklist for each kind of Schengen visa. For tourism it asks for a photo that meets Dutch requirements: in colour, no more than six months old, 3.5 by 4.5 centimetres, with a white or light-coloured background.

Because the checklist points to the Dutch requirements, and those ask for a print resolution of at least 400 dpi, this preset works at 400 DPI. The file is 551 by 709 pixels and prints at 35 by 45 millimetres; eight copies fit on a 4 by 6 inch sheet.

One line on the checklist may save you the trouble: if you apply through an external service provider, you do not need to submit a photo, because a digital photo will be taken at your appointment. Check where you will apply before printing anything.

What the Dutch requirements add

The Dutch photo rules for passports and identity cards, which the checklist refers to, give more detail. The face measures 26 to 30 millimetres from chin to crown for anyone aged 11 or over, the photo is not edited, and it is printed on smooth, high quality photo paper. They list light grey, light blue and white as background colours.

On the 709 pixel file, that face length comes to somewhere around 410 to 473 pixels.

White or light-coloured

The visa checklist itself is a little broader than the passport rules: white or light-coloured. Choose a plain pale wall with no gradient from light to dark, and stand far enough in front of it that your shadow falls elsewhere. A white sheet stretched behind you is a good stand-in if there is no such wall.

If the wall in your photo is busy, "Replace the background" fills it with white for this preset. Since the Dutch rules say the photo must not be edited, use it only when a real plain wall is out of reach.

Colour and age

The photo must be in colour and no more than six months old when you apply. A photo you had taken for a previous visa may have the right size but be too old, so check the date before you reuse it.

Printing for the appointment

Have the sheet printed on photo paper at a lab or kiosk with resizing switched off, then cut out a single copy. Bring the original print, as the checklist asks for the original document rather than a copy.

Once cut, measure the copy with a ruler; it should be 35 by 45 millimetres.

Other visa types

The checklist for visiting family or friends lists the same photo. Other visa types and other countries of application have checklists of their own on Netherlands Worldwide, so open the one that fits your trip before you have photos made.
