How it works

  1. Add your images

Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

Immigration New Zealand sets its photo rules by file size and shape rather than by pixels. For online visa applications and NZeTA requests, the photo must be a JPG or JPEG taken in portrait mode with a 3:4 aspect ratio, and the file must weigh between 512 KB and 3.14 MB. A photo sent with a paper application must be 35 millimetres wide and 45 millimetres high.

The digital preset here saves 1200 by 1600 pixels, a 3:4 portrait we chose because it carries enough detail to reach the 512 KB floor at a high quality. If a very smooth picture still comes out lighter than that, the file is padded up to the minimum without changing the image. The print preset makes 35 by 45 millimetres at 300 DPI.

Read the editing rules below before you touch any switch on this page. Immigration New Zealand is unusually strict about altered photos, and says an edited photo can delay an application or lead to it being declined.

What counts as editing

The photo must be natural and unaltered. The page lists what not to use: filters, beautification features and AI editing tools, changes to colour, brightness, contrast or sharpness, skin smoothing or face slimming, and digitally removing objects. It also names cropping your head and shoulders out to place them on a plain background.

That last point rules out the "Replace the background" switch for this page, so leave it off. Choosing the 3:4 frame and saving the file at a set size does not alter colours or your features, but the decision rests with Immigration New Zealand.

A plain background and good contrast

The background must be neutral and plain and show only you, with no other people or objects. Patterned clothing and flowery backdrops can cause technical problems with the recognition system, so wear something plain. There must be no shadows on your face or behind you, and good contrast between the two.

The page gives distances that solve most lighting problems: stand half a metre in front of the background, with the photographer one and a half metres in front of you.

Avoid the selfie

A selfie rarely meets the rules, according to the page, and the example it shows fails on background, position and lighting at once. Ask someone else to take the photo. If you must take it yourself, hold the camera at eyebrow height with the light coming from behind it.

Using a professional photographer

Immigration New Zealand says a photo is more likely to be accepted when a professional takes it. Give the photographer the requirements and make sure the file they send is under 10 MB. If their file is larger than 3.14 MB for an online form, add it here with the digital preset to bring it inside the range without cutting off anything you need.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a New Zealand visa photo be?

For online applications, a 3:4 portrait JPG between 512 KB and 3.14 MB. For paper applications, 35 by 45 millimetres.

How many pixels does the photo need?

The page we read gives no pixel figure. This tool saves 1200 by 1600, which is 3:4.

Can I remove the background?

No. Immigration New Zealand lists placing your head and shoulders on a plain background among the edits it does not accept.

Does it apply to the NZeTA as well?

Yes. The same page covers visa applications and NZeTA requests.

Why is there a minimum file size?

The page states one without explaining it. A very small file usually means a low resolution or heavy compression, which makes a face harder to recognise.
