Korean embassies list the documents for each visa type. For the C-3-9 short-term visitor visa for tourism, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Canada asks for a passport-type colour photo of 3.5 by 4.5 centimetres with a white background, date stamped on the back to show it was taken within six months. The application form itself is completed online through the Korea Visa Portal and printed.

This page makes the photo at 35 by 45 millimetres, saved as 413 by 531 pixels at 300 DPI, and eight copies fit on a 4 by 6 inch sheet for printing.

Requirements differ between embassies and visa types, so check the list of the post where you apply. The table links the page we read and the date.

The date stamp on the back

The Canadian list wants the date the photo was taken stamped on its back, as proof that it is less than six months old. Photo labs and studios can often add this for you; if you print at a kiosk, ask at the counter, and check with the embassy whether a handwritten date is accepted before you rely on one.

The date is the proof that the photo is under six months old, so do not leave it out.

A white background

White is the only colour the list names. Stand in front of a plain white wall or sheet, with light coming from in front of you so no shadow falls behind your head. Cream or grey walls are a common reason a photo looks wrong next to the white the embassy expects. A white sheet hung flat, without folds, works as well as a wall.

If your wall is not white, "Replace the background" fills it with white for this preset. Look at the edge of the hair afterwards.

Printing on photo paper

A passport-type photo means a real photographic print, not a picture printed on ordinary paper. Have the sheet printed at a lab or kiosk with resizing turned off, cut one copy out along the gaps, and measure it: 35 millimetres wide, 45 high.

Use a trimmer, or sharp scissors and a ruler, so the edges are straight.

Applying in another country

Other Korean embassies publish their own lists, and details such as the shade of the background and the age of the photo can differ. Read the list of the post where you apply before printing. The size of 3.5 by 4.5 centimetres is the common factor, which is why this page uses it.

Framing the face

The list gives no head size. A passport-type photo usually shows the head and the top of the shoulders, centred, with the face filling a good part of the height. Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression and both ears and eyes clear of hair.
