Swiss embassies publish their own Schengen visa checklists, and the photo sizes in them differ. The Embassy of Switzerland in Tanzania, in its checklist dated June 2024, asks for a recent passport-sized photograph in colour against a plain white background, 47 millimetres high and 36 wide, with 32 to 36 millimetres from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head without hair.

This page makes that size: 425 by 555 pixels at 300 DPI, which prints at 36 by 47 millimetres. Six copies fit on a 4 by 6 inch sheet.

Other Swiss posts publish different sizes, so use this page if you apply in Tanzania or your post asks for 36 by 47, and check your own checklist otherwise. The table links the checklist and the date we confirmed it.

Head size without the hair

The checklist measures the head from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head without hair, 32 to 36 millimetres. On the 555 pixel tall file that is about 378 to 425 pixels. Voluminous hair can go above that line; what counts is where the skull ends.

Place the frame so the face is centred with a little room above the hair.

Plain white, clear and sharp

The background must be plain white, and the photo clear and of good quality. A white wall in daylight, a step or two behind you, gives an even background without a shadow behind the head.

"Replace the background" fills with white for this preset if your wall is not white. Check the edge of the hair at full size afterwards.

Taken recently, in colour

The photograph must be recent and in colour. Use a picture taken for the application rather than one from an older document, even if the size happens to match.

Keep the other copies from the sheet; they are identical, which matters if you are asked for more than one.

Printing the sheet

Have the sheet printed on photographic paper at a lab or kiosk with resizing off, then cut a copy out along the gaps. A ruler should show 36 millimetres across and 47 down, a millimetre wider and two taller than the common European format.

If the kiosk adds a white border or shrinks the image to fit the paper, the copy comes out too small; print again with that setting turned off.

Before you go to the embassy

Put the photo in an envelope with your other documents so it stays flat and clean, and keep the spare copies from the sheet in case one is damaged on the way. Compare it with the checklist once more on the day you apply.
