How it works
Add your images
Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.
Pick a quality or a target size
Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.
Download
Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.
Animated WebP is the better format on paper: smaller, with more colours and smooth transparency. But a good deal of software plays only GIF. Presentation programs, many email builders, older forum software, some chat tools and plenty of upload forms still accept one moving-picture format and no other. This page converts the WebP so the animation can go there.
All frames are carried across with their timing. The page starts at quality 80, which gives each frame a palette of 205 colours, close to the most a GIF can hold. A WebP that is a single still picture converts too, although for a still PNG is nearly always the better choice.
Expect the file to grow, often several times over. GIF stores every frame in full and has none of the compression between frames that makes WebP small. If the result is too heavy for its destination, scale it down in the Resize panel. The WebP is sent over an encrypted connection, converted on our own servers and deleted within one hour.
What changes in the picture
Two things are lost on the way, and both come from the GIF format itself. The first is colour. A WebP frame can use millions of colours and a GIF frame at most 256, so smooth gradients such as skies, skin and soft shadows are approximated and can show faint bands or a fine grain.
The second is soft transparency. WebP can make a pixel partly see-through. GIF knows only fully visible and fully invisible. A sticker with a feathered edge or a drop shadow therefore gets a hard outline, and the semi-transparent parts become either solid or gone. Stickers with crisp edges convert well, and ones with glows and shadows look better against the colour they will finally sit on.
Keeping the GIF to a sensible size
An animated WebP of 400 KB can turn into a GIF of 2 or 3 MB. Before sending that anywhere, decide how large the animation has to appear. Scaling the frames to half their width and height brings the file down to about a quarter, and in a chat bubble or on a slide nobody will notice the difference.
Colour is the second control. Flat animation, such as icons, logos and interface demos, looks the same with 64 colours as with 205, so quality 25 is safe there and cuts the size further. For a hard limit, switch to Target size and type the number; colours are reduced first and dimensions after.
Stickers, and where they come from
A large share of animated WebP files are stickers saved out of messaging apps, which use the format for them. People convert them to GIF to reuse them where stickers are not supported: in another chat app, in a comment field, in a presentation. That works, within the limits above. Remember that stickers are usually somebody's artwork. Using one in a private chat is one thing; putting it into something you publish or sell needs the artist's permission.
Frequently asked questions
Does an animated WebP stay animated as a GIF?
Yes. Every frame and its delay are carried over, as long as you only convert or scale. A crop or a rotation would reduce it to one frame.
Why is the GIF so much larger than the WebP?
GIF stores each frame completely and without the frame-to-frame compression WebP uses. Three to ten times the size is normal.
The transparent edge of my sticker looks jagged. Can that be fixed?
Only partly. GIF has no partial transparency, so soft edges turn hard. Scaling the result down a little hides most of it.
Can I go the other way, from GIF to WebP?
Yes. Add the GIF on the GIF compressor page and choose WebP in the Format menu. The animation is kept and the file gets much smaller.
Will the GIF loop like the original?
Yes. The loop setting stored in the WebP is carried into the GIF, so an endless loop stays endless.
How many frames can the WebP have?
Up to 300. Longer animations are refused. Cut them into parts first, or keep them as video.
