How it works

  1. Add your images

Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

WebP is supported everywhere in modern browsers, but a handful of older applications, some printing services, and certain older devices still expect a JPEG specifically. This tool decodes the WebP and re-encodes it as JPEG at the quality you choose, so you can use the image anywhere a JPEG is required.

As with any WebP-to-JPEG conversion, transparent areas in the source are filled with solid white, since JPEG has no transparency channel. If the WebP doesn't use transparency, the conversion is a straightforward like-for-like swap.

The whole conversion runs on our own servers in the EU, with the original not kept and the result deleted within one hour. If you're converting for a printing service specifically, ask what format and colour profile they expect; most accept standard JPEG without issue, but a few have their own specific requirements to check first. Metadata the WebP carried is left out of the JPG by default.

Why the picture you saved is a WebP

Most people do not choose WebP; it arrives. A website sends its images in whichever format the browser says it can read, and for years that has meant WebP. Use Save image as, and the file on your disk ends in .webp even though the address on the page may have said .jpg. Then a slide deck, an older photo editor, a print kiosk or an upload form refuses it. Converting to JPG fixes that in a few seconds, and the picture you get is the same one you saw on the page.

The JPG will be larger, and that is normal

WebP is the more efficient of the two, so the same picture needs more bytes as a JPEG: expect the file to grow by a third to a half at a comparable quality. This page starts at 85, a setting where a second round of lossy compression adds very little damage to what the WebP already did. If you are going to edit the JPG and save it again, go to 90 or higher and keep that copy as your working file. For an upload with a size limit, switch to Target size and enter the limit.

Animated and transparent WebP files

A JPEG holds one still picture. An animated WebP, such as a sticker or a short loop, therefore becomes its first frame, and the result says that the animation was dropped. If you need it to keep moving, choose GIF in the Format menu instead; the frames are carried across.

Transparent areas are painted with a background colour. It is white unless you change it in the editor, and it pays to pick the colour of the page or slide the picture is going onto.

Frequently asked questions

Why would I need to convert WebP to JPG?

Usually for compatibility with older software, printing services, or systems that specifically require JPEG.

Does this lose quality?

Both formats are lossy, so there's a small quality trade-off depending on the quality setting chosen.

What happens to a transparent WebP?

The transparent areas become solid white in the JPEG output.

Can I batch convert several WebP files?

Yes, add them together and download as a ZIP.

Can I rename .webp to .jpg instead of converting?

No. Renaming changes the label, not the contents. Some programs will open the file anyway by looking inside it, but anything that expects real JPEG data will report a damaged file.

Does Photoshop open WebP without converting?

Versions from 23.2 on, released in 2022, open and save WebP directly. Older versions need a plug-in or a conversion like this one.
