WhatsApp shows a profile picture as a square, and in chats as a circle inside it. Upload a tall photo and the app asks you to crop it, which often means losing the people at the edges, half a group, or the top of a landmark behind you. Plenty of people would rather see the whole photo, a little smaller. Add your picture and it is placed whole inside a 1000 by 1000 pixel square, centred, with white filling the space above and below or at the sides. Nothing is cut and nothing is stretched. WhatsApp does not publish a profile photo size; 1000 by 1000 pixels is our choice, large enough to look sharp on any phone and small enough to upload quickly. Change the colour of the bands, or the size, in the same panel. ## Choosing the band colour White suits most photos, but a colour taken from the picture itself, such as the sky or a wall, makes the bands blend in. Black looks good behind night photos. Type any colour code, or pick one, and the bands change straight away. Because chats show the picture as a circle, keep the people near the middle; the corners of the square are hidden in the round view. ## Group photos and landscapes Wide pictures of a whole family or a view lose the most when cropped square. Padded, they show in full but smaller, so faces in the round chat icon are tiny. If that matters more, crop to the most important part with the square crop page instead. ## Other apps The same square works for Telegram, Signal and most other messaging apps, which also crop profile pictures to a square or circle. ## Privacy Your photo is processed on our server and deleted once the square is ready. ## Status and stories For WhatsApp Status, which fills the phone screen, a tall 9:16 picture works better than a square; use the aspect ratio page to crop to 9:16 for that. ## A sharper picture A blurred or tiny source photo does not get sharper by being padded. If yours was saved from a chat in low quality, find the original on your phone, or run it through the AI upscaler first. ## Business accounts On WhatsApp Business, the profile picture is often a shop logo.
